Changing Exterior Facade--Help & Opinions Please!
Comments (2)The addition of a roofed front porch could go a long way toward enhancing the curb appeal of your house. Nothing too elaborate, but perhaps a simple gable with a handsome, well-proportioned column at each front corner. You might also think about replacing the upper floor windows with some that more harmonious with those on the ground floor. An architect could probably sketch something out for you very quickly for a very modest fee. You wouldn't necessarily need elaborate plans if you have a good builder and if your local planning department didn't require precise drawings. Architects have an eye for proportion, which should be an important consideration. You'd want a porch addition to be properly scaled. What colour is the roof? Darkening the paint on the upper floor with a colour that harmonizes with the dark stone and the roof would tend to give the house a more grounded look and pull it together. As it is now, the second floor kind of looks like it's hovering above the ground. Finally, the little topiary balls along the foundation do little to make the house settle into its surroundings. They would be fine along either side of a front walk, but a better choice for foundation plantings would be some shrubbery in more natural forms at various heights. Good foundation plantings can dramatically alter one's initial impression of a house and give the place a look of being more nestled into the landscape. Have you thought of adding some trees to your front garden? Trees have a way of making houses look more established and always lend a certain grace. Your house is very appealing, but I think you're right, a little tweak here and there will enhance its appeal. Hope this helps. James...See MorePlease help! Comments (27)Anglophilia- We love the idea of the “triangle of light”. It will do so much for the space. I totally understand your rant of lack of tables/lights! You can find me reading pitifully curled up next to the only lamp in the room, with my drink out of arms reach on the coffee table. I think that these suggested ideas of where/what types of tables and lights to add in will make this a much better space to hang out in. Artemis_ma- Thank you for the insight! I appreciate it. That seems to be the general consensus of what to change in this room. I love this red brick, so I’d much rather design a room around it than to paint it! Lascatx- Great advice, thanks. And thank you for the helpful LED information, I’m sure that will make all the difference. We’ve already started the hunt for a new rug—we’re excited to see what that does for the room and where to go from there (for the coffee table, etc). Artdreamer- Thank you for the advice! We used to have a beautiful palm tree in the corner, but unfortunately it only lived a year or so. Not sure if I just don’t have good luck with plants, or if it didn’t like our cold, dark winters. We may try again! Those are great rug suggestions, and I like the idea of adding a mirror to reflect light to further brighten the room. Thanks! K Fitz- No problem! I’m sure it will be more messy and difficult than the internet makes it seem (aren’t home projects always this way?) but… 1) We plan to follow this set of directions to remove the brick: https://www.wikihow.com/Replace-a-Damaged-Brick ). 2) We will then cut the brick in half (either with a circular saw or by hand with a chisel https://www.thisoldhouse.com/more/how-to-hand-cut-brick ). 3) We will then re-insert the brick, pushing it back in until it is flush with the rest of the brick wall....See MoreChanging My Exterior Colors -Help!!
Comments (1)I can barely see the brick in this photo - looks brown perhaps? If you want to move away from those tones, and there's not much brick to begin with, then I'd consider painting it. I would do the brick and siding the same color, or at least, not have the brick be lighter than the siding. As it is, the structure seems top-heavy, so you don't want to reinforce that. I also can't tell your roof color because of the snow. Once the brick is primed, the roof tone would be the only limiting factor. That means the potential combinations are numerous. To narrow down, I'd look for examples of houses you like either online or in your area, and use them as a general color guide. One thought - I'd consider doing a brightish color on the front door, so it comes forward. Right now it seems lost in the shadows....See Morebiondanonima (Zone 7a Hudson Valley)
