Using compost with ferns native to California?

I would like to plant, along a north facing wall in my yard, a few different types of ferns that are said to grow naturally along the West Coast from Canada to Southern California. Some general planting instructions for ferns that I've seen online advise planting them in a half compost/half soil mixture. Elsewhere, however, I’ve read that
compost is rarely if ever appropriate for California native plants.

Should I use compost in this situation?

Thanks
