How to make my French country-ish kitchen look more modern
Comments (26)hate to not have to say anything new lol..but yes of course, it's the backsplash. nice suggestions above. will make tons of difference hardware can be changed or not..i think it's pretty versatile a rug will help to set a tone..but if you're hesitant about rugs-I'd look into changing the lighting fixture for something that'd reflect your taste more it's all easy fixes, relatively speaking. you're not miles from what you envision..you're couple feet away:) yes, paint creams white color..or not a neutral, but a version of some color you love, so it won't fight with the cabinets you can use creams and whites together a lot in decor, but with cabinetry it's harder to swing it; so I'd paint. Brick-up to you. Will look ok whether painted or not, or so I feel. Maybe start with the build ins then decide about brick. You also will probably have your backsplash by then..will help you decide if the backsplash is patterned for example-I'd be tempted to paint the brick more It's not a lot of brick too, so whatever you decide-easier....See Morehelp selecting more modern kitchen pendants
Comments (17)What is your budget? I do love Circa, I purchased quite a few from them... they sometimes have sales, and with this pandemic sales are happening more frequently. West Elm, Hudson Valley are two others I like... so many great options out there. Capiz is pretty and I do love it, almost purchased one for above my kitchen table, but that style particularly leans coastal. ETA: Circa is having a 20% off sale now, with free shipping. If you have any questions, their customer service is great, assuming they are working. Happy shopping!...See MoreMake home LESS mid-century modern?
Comments (20)It's true, I struggled with what to call this house at first. Since it was built in the middle of the century and has a few of those elements it seemed like it fit most in mcm....but without the modern part haha! Just literally mid-century. I think you're all right that it's just a ranch house. The builder lived in it for a year or two after he finished it, so I don't think it was designed by an architect. I think he just built what he liked. I guess when we moved in I felt like we could do whatever we wanted to on the inside and it would work, but everyone who comes over tends to throw "mid-century modern" terms around like baseballs so it made me second guess everything! I think the dated...well, everything...makes it hard to envision as anything but 60s/70s vibes. So once we start doing our work it will start to take on a new life....See MoreAny simple fix to make the kitchen area more modern?
Comments (14)Nice kitchen, but your are right, it needs updating. The first thing is to paint the walls and upper soffit of the kitchen. You have good light and not that many walls, so my suggestion is to paint a dark color, not light, to extend the kitchen cabinets and have them blend in the room. Keep the white ceiling. I always like Benjamin Moore Decorators White for ceilings, as it's a bright white with no underlying color tones. First paint preference is a raisin color close to the mahogany color of the cabinets. See below for color palettes for reference. The kitchen pics below show how a similar color to the cabinets highlight the overall room and not just the cabinets. You already have a great kitchen, countertops and backsplash and this will enhance them. If you prefer another color than the raisin, consider a dark navy blue. I agree to remove the curtains and consider sliding fabric panels for privacy. I always bring window treatments from ceiling to floor for a cleaner look. Replace the dining chairs with something light and modern, like the Wishbone Chair or Breuer Chair. Add a colorful rug, either in the kitchen area or under the table. The lighting is something I'll do more research on for you. Hope this helps. On the following pics, note how color to match the cabinets update the space V V V Notice this black cabinet and the black wall behind it. The black wall brings the cabinet to another design level. V V V Replace existing chairs with a lighter wood and style. There are tons to choose from at decent prices if you are not looking for the originals. V V V A colorful rug in the kitchen area or under the dining table. Make sure to look for a silghtly pink tone to the rug so that it doesn't clash with the existing tile floor. The existing paint you have, fights all the tones in the room.
