Please review my Warm Modern Kitchen
Comments (38)Food for thought.... I don't like sitting to eat where there is a large cooktop. When you put the cooktop on the island, it is not as functional as an eating place. You need to decide what is more important; eating or cooking. If eating on the island is more important, then I would move the cooktop to where the ref/frig is and the island is freed for eating. I simply don't think your pass through looks good enough in your kitchen. It really looks like a hole cut out on the wall because the house design was not good enough. i am sorry.... Do you really need this? Can you live without? How does it look in the DR? Does it look like a hole on the wall in the DR? These things never look very good, IMHO. Most pass throughs scream out "I was an afterthought because the initial design was so bad..." Sometimes, a well placed door looks way better than a pass through. I am being blunt. But you have not started yet so this is the time. Can you spend a little more money and make it a peninsula or completely open up? Yes, they are expensive but if you are putting in Thermador columns, you have a pretty big budget. The walnut trim around white on Sochi's kitchen is what give that kitchen the pop, the character and style. It is one of the elements that makes it work so well!...See MoreHow to make off white appear more white and less cream?
Comments (12)I think it looks very nice just as it is. It's been painted and distressed to look like it is old, and if you paint it stark white it's going to look new. If you want an aged look, then keep it the way it is. If you consider that farmhouse is a look that incorporates what a farmer would have had in his/her home, then it's perfectly appropriate. The story could be that someone in a more formal wealthy home passed this piece on to the farmer. Authentic farmhouse is a medley of hand-me-down/handmade styles. Farmers didn't really "decorate" their homes, rather they evolved over time. Their furniture was more of a hodgepodge of colors, styles and patterns. So I think if you like it as is, decorate your room around it. This "modern farmhouse" trope is kind of cookie-cutter and cliche'd IMO....See MoreHelp me make my kitchen more modern
Comments (22)Smamattacker, you make a point about the cabinet color changes. Another on that thread said the lighting was blown up for the 'after' pic... While I agree the lighting is definitely different, and possibly enhanced in photo, if you read the thread, the cabinet color wasn't changed. Anther tip I read on Maria's site for a minor change with big impact related to Charlene's kitchen is painting the dark grout (done correctly it can last many years) the lightest tone in the floor tile. Also, painting the window trim a very light color that matches the undertones of the new backsplash; right now it competes, not contrasts, with the kitchen. It's a lovely kitchen. With the right changes, I believe you can make it a timeless and enjoyable space you will enjoy for years to come....See MoreMake home LESS mid-century modern?
Comments (20)It's true, I struggled with what to call this house at first. Since it was built in the middle of the century and has a few of those elements it seemed like it fit most in mcm....but without the modern part haha! Just literally mid-century. I think you're all right that it's just a ranch house. The builder lived in it for a year or two after he finished it, so I don't think it was designed by an architect. I think he just built what he liked. I guess when we moved in I felt like we could do whatever we wanted to on the inside and it would work, but everyone who comes over tends to throw "mid-century modern" terms around like baseballs so it made me second guess everything! I think the dated...well, everything...makes it hard to envision as anything but 60s/70s vibes. So once we start doing our work it will start to take on a new life....See MoreGeneviève
