how late is too late for bareroots in hot climates?

I know that last year, when everything went on sale at the end of the season and I bought tons of super cheap bareroots, a good third of them didn't make it because the summers are too rough here. I'm just wondering if I have already reached that point now where bareroots really don't have enough time before the heat arrives. I had told myself about a month ago that I would not get anymore until next year. you in the

But the itch for MORE! is creeping up on me. For those of you in hotter climates such as mine, what is your cut off?

Ok, Years ago at the end of bare root season which was fairly late in 2 June and July I got tons of free bare root rose bushes. I soaked them really well planted them and it was hot out. So I put Brown paper bags over the top to keep them from the hot Sun kept the bag really wet and did that for a couple of weeks until they started to leaf out and they did great. So I'd say with the proper care you could probably do those most any time.

In my garden conditions, the cut-off is January! I don't have running water out there,and I've learned the hard way that I can only plant successfully in the rainy seasons (fall and winter). Even potted roses have died on me, when planted out in spring. So I'd advise planting them into pots for their first summer, and then plant them out in the ground in the autumn.

You already know that mid-summer is not the time to aerate. To answer your question, lawns can be aerated in summer (golf cousrses do it and I have done it when the lawn was not stressed), but the lawn must be heavily watered thereafter to prevent adverse effects of the aeration. Although aeration will reduce thatch by removing it as the plugs are pulled, to be effective you are going to need no less (bare min.) than 20 holes per square foot. Rental machines make 6-9 holes per sq ft per pass.That's at least 3 passes min. Your problem may not be compaction. Are you aware that thatch impedes root depth growth? If your thatch is as bad as you describe, your time may be better spent using a power rake rather than aerating. But dethatching is even more agressive than aerating and should only be done when turf grass is in growth mode in the Spring or Fall.

I have planted bareroots up until the first week of June. Ideally earlier is better but in zone 5 there is still plenty of time. Call Pickering on the phone ASAP to order so they can get them on their way to you. If it is hot by the time they arrive, provide some shade when you plant them--I use my peony umbrellas but a lawn chair will do. But knowing the weather pattern we've been having the last few years, April has more sunny/warm weather than May. I suspect we will have plenty of overcast/chilly days just right for planting in May.

jc, I think she means temporarily, as in until she can get them planted into the ground. I have done the same thing. It’s kind of a compromise between keeping them potted on the patio, (where they dry out quickly and need water twice per day in summer) and planting them in the ground. It keeps the roots cooler(summer) without actually planting the rose. In my case, I use this trick when my sons have dug the hole for me, but I’m not physically up to planting the rose yet. I just pop the container into the hole, mulch the top, and water as needed. It works great! I just need to remember that the rose isn’t actually planted in the ground yet. I once had a rose grow it’s roots right through the drainage holes and continue growing on its merry way! Oops! I ended up just leaving it. Roses grow enormous here, and it helped keep it “mannerly”, for a while:). Lisa

No more bareroots in the ground when daytime temperatures hit 70F.

You might get them to root & leaf out in the shade in a pot when temperatures are between 70F -77F. Just protect them from the sun & wind. Anything warmer and the canes tend to dry out and die before roots can form.

Like Bart, I tend to pot up my bareroots for a season before planting them in the ground.

Kristine, that is a very interesting technique. So are they completely covered with the bag? I'm just planting my first body bags and I can definitely see the fixation. I hope mine do well.

Well by the time we got the free bare root rose bushes it was June or July it was really hot out . I let them soak for several days and then planted them out there or put them in a pot and used a full Brown paper bag to cover it and just kept it really super wet. I just wet it every single day sometimes twice A-day in the heat until they leafed out . They are still there and it's been 12 years.

Is it an ideal way ? Absolutely not but when you are given 13 free bare root rose bushes you do what you can to make them thrive.

I’ve been told not to, but so far I’ve gotten away with it. I shade the top, and spray it with the hose every day. I use moisture crystals when I plant, and I make sure to keep them well watered. I know it’s not recommended, but so far so good! Lisa

It depends on how cheap they are. I mean if you get them really cheap and only loose 1/3 then you're golden. Even if you pay half the price and only half make it, you still didnt really loose money. I say go for it. And i recommend potting the up in cheap nursery pots, letting them leaf out really well and wait until fall to put them in the ground. Thats what I would do. :)

When I lived in CA Central Valley I decided that anything I wanted to live had to be planted by April at the latest. I used to dig the big hole for roses, fill it with water and let the water all drain out and then plant the rose bush with more water. Fall is really the best time for planting in desert climates because then you get the benefit of winter rain.

I've had success pretty much year around. First I slam them well and add fish emulsion. Second I put them in very good potting soil. Third I place them under a tree away from direct sun. Lastly I water daily?

Its really just a matter of keeping the canes from drying out in the heat . It can definitely be done at any time just with more diligence to keep g the canes moist
