placement of vertical pulls on shaker cabs
Comments (5)My bottom screw of pull is centered in the imaginary rectangle where the right angle of cab frame occurs. This puts it about 1.5 inches from the horizontal edge, but we might have made them different if my frames were a different width. Pulls are 6 inches long. Cabs are full overlay. Yours would make me reach higher--I'm 5'6" tall and am happy with mine. By the way, my mother is now 89 and has big trouble reaching upwards...because my kitchen is planned for a fictitious old lady in her 80s, the less reaching the better, but upper cabs are, in general, a curse for such an old lady. (Mother entirely stopped using some upper cabs before she moved to assisted living joint.)...See MoreArgh! Cabinet snafu! WWYD? Anyone with flat panel shaker help?
Comments (5)Hmm. Well the company says they're now doing this because it secures the door to the drawer body better. They were plastic but apparently just changed to metal , and KD is getting samples of that hardware next week to show me. I would LOVE to see photos of yours, buehl, if it isn't a huge inconvenience. Perhaps they are the same and I should just not worry about it. Metal might look better than the gommy tan plastic ones I saw last week... I sure liked the nice, clean look of just the wood dovetailed edge, though! :( I don't have any photos myself since I just placed the order and the cabs are 6 weeks out......See MoreShould I add an edge detail to my modified Shaker door?
Comments (32)Thanks sombreuil_mongrel for your post. I didn't know that having wider bottom rails and narrow stiles was true Shaker. Good to know if we go with 3 inches on both the stiles and rails we will be craftsman style. I do like the look of the beefier frames. We saw that look in one high end kitchen and were very happy that Scherr's could accommodate that request. I checked the Scherr's site again and they offer a 5/32 diameter roundover profile (profile K) which is very close to your 1/8' diameter recommendation. Hopefully, that will offer enough paint chip and stain scuffing protection as mentioned by live_wire_oak. Carol...See MoreShaker cabs - square, bevel, or bead?
Comments (22)You are talking about the inside edge of the rails/stiles on the doors, right? I had thought that I would choose plain square ones until I realized that the inset-panel doors that are original to this house have a sort of ogee edge on the insides of the rails and stiles. And it is true that dust and gunk does not seem to collect much there, because the edge isn't horizontal. But I haven't decided if a similar ogee would make the rails/stiles look too wide on a relatively narrow cabinet door. I am a long way from needing to decide, but I rather like the idea of a beveled inside edge instead. At least for my house. I'd love to see pictures of all these styles in real life if anyone has them....See MoreMichelle
