Fungus ID in TTTF

Looking for a little help figuring out what type of fungus I have. My lawn is TTTF and cultivars are Bullseye, Turbo, Hemi, Hot Rod and GTO. I've had quite a bit of trouble with brown patch the past several years but it really seems way too early here in central NC for that. I've already got Propiconazole and have Azoxystrobin on the way.

Anyway, does anyone have any ideas of what this could be? It's not a major problem yet and with a little luck I hope to keep it that way.

It looks like whatever it is I get on St Augustine in the spring. Have you tried cornmeal on it? I've been promoting cornmeal against fungal disease here for, gosh, 16 years now. From the feedback I see in this and other forums it seems to work every time on St Augustine grass, but is not so successful on other types of turf. You might give it a shot. The app rate is 20 pounds per 1,000 square feet. Then give it 3 full weeks to clear things up completely.

I've tried everywhere around here to find cornmeal in some type of bulk form and outside of the small bags at the grocery store it doesn't exist. Same for soybean meal. My front lawn is 14.5k so buying it in the little 5lbs bags is not an option.

As a side note, I'm pretty sure this fungus has popped up every year since the reno in 2013. Usually in April the lawn gets a slight yellow tint in spots and by late June brown patch has set in. With the fungus damage the poor grass just didn't have enough left in it to make it through the hot, dry summer. Last year was the first time I correctly diagnosed the brown patch and with the use of fungicide I had very little casualties even though we had a pretty severe drought.

Best I can tell this could be yellow patch but wanted a little reassurance. The Azoxystrobin will be here tomorrow however Saturday would be the earliest I could get it down but they are calling for heavy rains on Sunday. Looks like Monday will be my best bet. The plan is a full strength dose of Azoxystrobin followed in 2 weeks by a full strength dose of Propiconazole. Then cut back to the lower dose if the fungus is under control alternating each through the rest of the summer.

SOMEONE PUT ME AT EASE.. I've got the green haze look. But, am pretty concerned. ...it's coming in uneven. I'm got some area where there is clearly green sprouts, and then other areas where just dirt. It seems like all the green are in patches where the straw is a little thicker, and then some patches of little to no straw where I have no germination. I'm wondering if I got washed out, and the areas of thicker straw held up better and also caught the seed of other areas ? BTW, I don't think it could be because of the typical straw holding moisture better. We've had enough rain where the ground has stayed consistently wet. (Almost too much) Tiemco? Anyone else? The only positive idea I can think of is that the straw incubated the seed a bit and helped hold temps and it is germinating faster. I'm at day 12.

Looks like Monotropa uniflora, ghost plant. Rather than being a fungus, it feeds on the underground mycelium and hyphae of fungi. It is a true plant, but has to gather its energy from something else.....mychorrizal fungi.

There is a little mushroom extremely common to the typical potting medium called Leucocoprinus bimbaumii. Associated with this harmless fungi is a network of underground mycelium and hyphae, the webby and grainy looking part of the mushroom body that does most of the work....feeding and decomposing. Neither a mycologist nor a microscope required for this identification. ;-) It's very common. Within the confines of a container, the always growing mycelium/hyphae network are found where there is oxygen....at the bottom near the drainage hole and even outside the container, especially if made of a porous material like terra cotta. The mycelium balls are often seen at the surface of the potting soil, too. Saprophytic fungus of most varieties have networks of underground mycelium but they are out of sight therefore out of mind. In our container plants, we get to observe the phenomenon closely. Leucocoprinus is the only fungus that I know of that has the bright yellow hyphae and mycelium. For other species, it's usually white or tan. It's also the only mushroom so common to peat based potting mixes. If you Google yellow houseplant mushroom, you will see what the fruiting bodies of this fuzzy stuff look like. Now, to the question of whether it's benecial or not! Outside in native soil, saprophytic fungi are typically beneficial, even essential. But in a container, not so much. These fungi are decomposers! The organic matter particles in your potting mix are what it's breaking down into what will eventually be washed out of the drainage hole. A nice course mix can become sludgy pretty quickly. If this were my plant, I'd be repotting in the spring with a brand new coarse textured medium. Commercial potting mixes come contaminated with the spores of this mushroom, by the way. It's a tropical species.

Had a change of plans yesterday. Just to get things started I went ahead and put down a Propiconazole app. That should give it at least 2 full days before we get rain. Last year it worked really well clearing up what I assume was brown patch. I will keep an eye on things for now and do a full strength app of the Azoxystrobin in two weeks. Hopefully at that point I can back off to a monthly maintenance app alternating between the two. My goal is to make it through a full year without having to do any major overseeding.
