I have also posted this inquiry in the Computer forum, but thought I would post it here too, since we have such an active group.

My old Asus Android Transformer tablet fell and broke and is no long usable. I am seriously considering purchasing another Android 10" tablet. I welcome any thoughts you may have and recommendations. It does not have to be a Transformer with the additional keypad. I found I did not like the keypad and used only the tablet, so a tablet is all I want.

Look at the better grades offered by Lenovo and Samsung. I don't have either, but my kids do and they always return to those brands for replacements.

Hi marita, I saw that you didn't have any responses yet and tried syncing my Touch with my Android phone. I pulled the book out of archives on the phone, turned on wifi on both devices and asked my phone to sync. It tells me I'm at the furthest page read on all devices. When I choose Menu, then Sync to Furthest Page Read on the Touch, I get the same response. I'm sorry I'm not more help. I would suggest that to some degree you get what you pay for and good hardware is expensive. I would also suggest being suspicious of any deal that appears too good to be true or buying from companies you never heard of. Those companies may not even be in business 6 months from now and in the case of China, where the discussion is not about the latest, greatest device but who makes the best knock-off of the latest, greatest device, to be even more careful. You might even want to think about how you feel about intellectual property theft. These no-name companies are often relying on others to do the R&D and simply copying the design. Frankly, some do it better than others. While you're reading reviews, you might want to make sure you are including some professional reviews from leading publications or reputable web sites. More than a few folks "rationalize" the purchase of mediocre equipment by downplaying deficiencies as a trade-off for a lower price. The simple fact is a lower resolution screen is a lower resolution screen and that cheap device with inferior hardware will never be an iPad or Xoom. Maybe off a little but kind of like saying a Chevy is just as good as a Cadillac and justifying it by thinking you never really wanted leather seats anyway.

Another interesting day with an android tablet. Last night I bought Discover magazine from the Nook app store and it said it would take over an hour to prepare and download the current issue. No problem. At bedtime I left the tablet on thinking it needed to be on for the download to complete. This morning it seemed the download must have terminated because the app had closed, but the magazine wasn't in the library and I couldn't reach it online. I checked and had received an email receipt. I called tech and they told me to turn the tablet off and then back on. The magazine then was in my library, but everything there had ribbons saying "download," indicating I'd have to redownload everything. Tech confirmed this. O.K. So I did. Later, I took the tablet to the market, planning to use the recipe book I bought on Nook for shopping. When I tried to open the book a box popped up that said wi-fi unavailable. Later I called tech, who didn't seem to have a solution, then took the tablet to Barnes and Noble (oddly, their ATT system wouldn't allow a download from the Nook store to my tablet) and to Office Depot. Everyone said I should be able to read a book or magazine offline, without wi-fi, but noone could figure out what to do to enable it. This evening I figured I'd buy something from the Toshiba book store app. One of the techs had me set up an account during the bookmarks issue because she said she was most familiar with that app. Tonight I tried to log in and it wouldn't accept my user name and password. I confirmed they were correct as I had written them down. I had the site email my password and the correct password arrived in my email, so what's with this? Does some of this just amount to requiring a network tablet and data plan for this sort of thing to work? The password thing makes me feel like I'm being singled out or something. It's getting weird. Later I checked in to Yahoo on the tablet and when I logged out there was a tiny message box that said I'd made changes in my Yahoo account. I'm on a PC as I write this, checked Yahoo and didn't notice any changes. Anyone know what that's about? Now that I'm safely on a PC I'll be reading all the previous posts. Ravencajun, I would like some advice if you don't mind. My sister needs to replace her old desktop computer. She is thinking she would like a laptop. She needs something basic and simple. Her vision is very poor and her hands are very crippled. All she needs or wants to do is email, facebook, her online banking and some shopping. Would you have any comments or suggestions of what I should think about and look for? We would appreciate any help.

Since an Android Tablet is identical (other than size) to an Android phone but with no "phone", I have both because we have Android phones and iPads.

Apple products command a price premium (which I think has allowed Android tablet sellers to creep up their prices too). I'm not sure they're worth the extra money unless ease of use is important and your other devices in the house are from Apple because cross product integration is pretty automatic and slick. iPad firmware makes everything easy but also inflexible. If you've been happy using an Android tablet, you'd probably gain nothing paying extra from an iPad and both product families do essentially the same thing the same way.

I would recommend staying away from the low price point ones. In the $200-$300 range you'll find a good selection of Android products from bigger name companies. But be careful, most break when dropped.

I've had a Google Nexus for over four years. I think it was made by Asus then but they changed manufacturers. When I went to Best Buy a few weeks ago, it seems they've gone all in for Samsung tablets.

DH is retired from Intel and he has started buying Lenova products. I didn't know they made tablets.

By the way, I have an iPad Mini, but really miss some of the Android apps and would like to be able to use them again.

mayflowers, I did not know Lenova made tablets either. I will start looking and comparing. Thanks to all of you for your guidance.

Lenovo bought IBM's PC business (including the top-rated ThinkPad laptop line) in the early 2000s. I've long been a ThinkPad user and fan and over the years have always have had at least a few Lenovo PCs in-house. Right now, it's 3. Lenovo has proven itself to be a top quality producer of PCs, though I have no experience with its tablets.

Walnut Creek, which Android apps do you like that are unavailable in Apple's iOS? I knew there were a few minor pockets of unavailability in the other direction but not so much Android to iOS.

Thank you all for the advice. I ordered the Samsung Tab A from Costco. Am so looking forward to getting it.

Elmer, there is a particular solitaire game and a crossword puzzle that I really like on the Andoid; those particular ones are not available on Apple. I think what I will do is just use the Android for any of the games I like to play to keep my brain from going to mush: Sudoku, Scrabble, Crosswords, and plan to find some more logic and number games.
