Is there a warm, white granite/quarzite?
Comments (44)I think that we're just going to bite the bullet and go for marble. We found a fairly large slab, 124 x 77 of Carrara Statuarietto. Although it has a lot of gray veining, it is really a white marble. I just hope it's large enough. I am NOT going to buy a 2nd slab for just a few square feet. Did your fabricators ever inspect the stone you wanted before you purchased it to verify that it would work? My fabricator said that the slab 'should' be large enough. Isn't there a way to be certain? Michelle16, if this slab doesn't work, I will probably take you up on calling Elisabeth....See MoreNew Build Kitchen Design Colour choices: Dark Blue Farmhouse Kitchen
Comments (75)If I had a dollar for every time I heard "I've never seen that done before" and "everyone else does/has...." I agree with cpartist. Having the hood, shelves and counter stools wood will be a good balance, along with a light floor, backsplash and walls. Between the kitchen and laundry room/back hallway in our last house, I had a floor to ceiling black hutch. No windows, only light from laundry room window (kitchen was in center of house), and the black hutch was not a hole of doom and gloom when the hallway light was off. One thing to consider is taking aways one wall cabinet on each side of the range hood to visually open up and lighten that area just a bit. What is happening elsewhere in the kitchen area, like around the corner of the far right wall? I currently have black soapstone counters on the F&B Blue Gray cabinets (walls painted the same color) with a counter to ceiling scalloped soapstone backsplash behind the range. It's countered with light French oak wood floors and light ceiling. Taking chances can pay off if executed well, but you will have to listen to a few naysayers along the way....See MoreHELP!! Comments (16)With that beautiful acacia floor with its distinctive grain I too would vote for something without too bold a competing pattern. A classic soapstone, or a “mist” (Virginia, Silver etc) honed granite or a soft white marble with gray - any of those would look beautiful. I suspect as geologists that you both really “see” stones for what they are as opposed to the general public’s perception of counters as being simply a field of color and pattern. But a deeper knowledge or appreciation of the material itself is not your friend when getting everything to pair well. Ironically. I don’t find Houzz easy to search, but you might see what you can locate pictures of kitchens with acacia floors as your starting point. I would focus on the choices of counters used first, then cabinet color, and finally backsplash. Re the marrying cool tones to warm ones there shades that are neutral but a paint color still will not tie everything together. You can used the same stone for the counter and backsplash though, which eliminates one matching conundrum. Final thought, don’t use quartz - you are geologists - you of all folk should have real stone....See MoreSmall Kitchen with Dramatic Granite and Hickory -Paint or New Stone?
Comments (64)Barncatz! Those stools look awesome BUT I Could not let the grand kids near them at that price! ugh...and I like the light fixtures too..As I say below--I'll First try rub and buff in Gold on my old fixture - add the edison bulbs and hang a little higher- to eliminate the eye ball glare from clear bulbs..-and get a smaller-gentler type of chain maybe... (( As I said a couple of times-the old fixture did NOT come with glass--and I did hang it originally with an Edison bulb BUT it shot you right in the eyes! So I ordered amber colored natural Mica-cut in proper size and shape and glued them into place..and it looked as you see in the first shots of my kitchen)) N LOve Home- I think I do..Its nice just throwing the switch for the island and nothing else. If you're sitting there reading, etc. you really need a light there I'm going to First try putting rub and buff in gold on my old fixture- then hang a Little higher and see what you all think!...See MoreCheryl Hannebauer
