Why is Pure Pumice/Perlite So Good for Rooting?

Is it my imagination, or does rooting happen both faster and more extensively in pumice and perlite than just about any other soil material?

I am guessing the reason for this might be that these materials are much lighter, and therefore new roots have less of a problem with displacing the particles in order to facilitate their growth in one direction. Are there other reasons?
