Lighting, geographic location, time of year and furnishings in the room will all impact how a colors looks in a room. When I first moved to LA I tried to use some of the same colors I had used in our house in Boston. That did not work well and I had to repaint the rooms.

So true about paint colors...making it so very difficult. And time consuming...

I actually have had issues with BM paint matching the chip and actual sample. The sample and chip are usually good. Of course, it's a little different because the chip isn't the paint but you can see if the color is correct. But I now always have the paint checked before I leave because, like I said I've had the BM Paint, not match. this happened at two different stores that carried BM paint. One time the paint that didn't match was a quart. Could be the person doing the mixing didn't do something right and not that there's anything wrong with their color calibration. The colors I had issues with were mid to darker range colors.

When I look at paint online I usually don't pay much attention to the blob paint picture because I think it looks really off a lot of times. I try and find as many photos as I can online of the paint color in a room and pay attention to the lighting and how the paint is reading on all areas. I think it can help narrow down the choices when selecting paint to sample. Because of lighting there are still times I ended up paying quite a bit for samples.

Side note - I miss the tiny BM samples. The sample (pint?) is just too big and I actually buy less testers now because of it. When they were small and it was fast to just grab the container and check out vs. wait to be mixed I actually bought more. Maybe it's just me though.

Are you looking to repaint all your walls? That is a pretty color.

You'll need to try samples on your walls and get a good feel for the undertones in your room. I just finished choosing a white and what worked in one room looked puddy dirty in another room.

Sheeisback, the color in the Kincaid photo works with my stuff, if I can actually find a color that looks like that IRL. The sample I have doesn’t work. The way I agonize, waffle, and second-guess when choosing paint, it could be years before I actually find the right color. :o(

I like the small samples they used to have, too, plus you didn’t have all of the leftover pints to dispose of safely.

I ended up painting two rooms across the hall from each other in our new house -- one facing north and one facing south -- two different but similar shades of green because the same color didn't work in both rooms because of the light. I'm so glad my husband didn't think I was nuts.
