How to hide the ugly septic cap?
Comments (15)Some of the hollow "boulders" made to go over things like this are better looking than others, so they are definitely worth looking into. They are heavy enough not to blow away but light enough that two guys can pick even the large one up easily to pump out the tank. Listen to bodica about the care and feeding of the "pet septic tank", and if you don't have a pump-failure/back-up alarm GET ONE. Luckily our septic cap was a dark greeny-black and flush to the ground to where we could let the soil come over the edge about an inch and let the grass grow - when we had it checked or pumped we just used a trowel to push back the dirt at the edge of the cover and pop it up, but we made sure to leave the middle of the cap bare so we knew where it was. Unattractive as it may have been we stuck a marker next to the cap in the winter so we could find it under snow if necessary. We had the level checked annually - the septic company would stop by sometime when they were in the neighborhood so it didn't cost us anything to have them take a quick peek - because the number of people in the household and the amount of water and solids that enter the system are really much more important than the actual size of the tank. A family of five with a WOH parent, a SAH parent and three kids who are home all day who all shower/bathe daily, run the dishwasher frequently, do lots of laundry and use the toilet many times a day will need much more frequent pumping than a family of two working adults who are both away from home all the day and dry-clean half their wardrobe, even though they have the same size tank....See MoreHow to hide a pole
Comments (5)Running the power underground would be something you are responsible for, but in most places, code would require that you have a licensed electrician do the work. If you're interested in doing the work to save money, an electrician would probably allow an arrangement where you do the stuff that doesn't require electrical expertise, such as trenching and laying conduit, and they would run the wire and make the connections. I did this once and the cost was not too bad. Another time I looked into doing it and the power company priced their portion prohibitively (so as to discourage the work from being done.) You would need to research the costs in order to find out what you're up against. If you don't want to run underground, what you're doing with the skyrockets is the alternative....See MoreUgly front yard needs help!
Comments (7)There are some great drought tolerant plants that could be used as a 3 ft hedge. you could use all the same kind or make it a mixed hedge. The texas rangers (Leucophyllum) come in many sizes, keep leaves in winter, and bloom several times a year in summer. Here is Lynn’s Legacy in my yard and it has never even needed pruning. Rosmary is also a very drought tolerant evergreen that would make a handsome hedge. Just make sure you get an upright variety like this Tuscan Blue. The australian eremophila’s come in a lot of different leaf and flower colors and shapes but they are great plants. Here’s Summertime Blue which blooms all summer. There are also California native plants that would fit the bill like Cleveland Sage which smells wonderful and has spectacular blue flowers in spring. Rock mulch is attractive, long lasting, keeps down weeds if put on thickly and keeps soil under it cooler for your plants. we have a lot of different sizes and colors here but i dont know whats available there. Good luck with your yard!...See MoreHide a Utility Pole in Front Yard...
Comments (13)Camouflage painting is the first thing I thought. That or a flower pattern dress but I'd go with using water based exterior wood stain and a pressure washer with a 0 degree tip. Hit it with a base color followed up with a couple of other camouflage colors. When finished run water through the washer until clean and no need to do the back side of the pole....See MoreDenita
