Hiding those utility boxes. . .
Comments (7)Most utility companies or neighhood policy keep you from altering the look of the actual item. But you can make a corner or U shaped picket fence to soften them...One that can be pulled up if they have to do big work on the utilities. I have seen a headboard cut in half and put together to make a corner fence. You might make a box and decorate like a birdhouse or firehouse or fairy house and set over the small utilities, but label them with a sign saying what is under them. DO NOT cover a fire hydrant....See MoreHow to hide streetlight in neighbor's back yard?
Comments (18)I agree, always try to talk first. You never know, it might work. Ok, it probably won't simply because a considerate neighbor would have thought things out before installing, taking his neighbors' rights into account first. Clearly, that didn't happen. So, like mentioned, check laws for your area (bi-laws?). Here's some things to ask when you call your town hall (city hall??): - first, is it even permitted to errect a light standard? - if so, maximum height? - allowable distance from neighboring property lines - ask about laws concerning the "Reasonable enjoyment" of your property. In other words, what are the remedies for when a person is interfering with YOUR enjoyment of your property. A bright light IS a problem. - if this guy installed it himself, you may want to ask the township if that's allowed, or if it MUST be done by a licenced electrician and be registered with the town OR inspected. - if it needs to be inspected and was not, then *cough* ask the town to have an inspector pay the neighbor a visit. If inspectors are anything like here, it could end up causing this idiot more trouble than it's worth. Hope you find a resolution to your peace and quiet. :)...See MoreHide trashy neighbors yard help
Comments (29)Most places that sell bamboo sell clumping varieties as well as the running types. And IME, a can of clumping bamboo is no more expensive than a tree or shrub of similar size/height and often quite a bit less. And that is where bamboo has an advantage over trees and shrubs for privacy screening......it attains the desired height very rapidly. Typically bamboo canes will grow to a maximum height in the first year after planting, whereas it will take a tree or shrub several seasons or even as much as a decade to achieve the same height. Unless you can find one at the desired height already and that is a very expensive proposition!! Here is one source....See MoreHow to hide ugly pole in front yard?
Comments (11)As others have said, check with your local utility and municipality to find out what is allowed. I know around here one isn't allowed to put anything on the poles themselves or use the poles or guy wires for support of plants. My solution was to plant a large shrub at the base that is one that can be cut to the ground if needed. At eye level one just sees the shrub since it totally surrounds the yellow part of the wire, and the upper gray metal part isn't especially visible. No one can walk into the wire, we don't need to mow or trim around the obstacle, and there are spring flowers and fall color....See Morebillyk72
