Crown Molding - Please help!

We are in the process of installing crown molding, and are having second thoughts on the size/design we chose. After doing more than half of the job, we noticed the crown is thicker than the baseboards and seems a bit clunky. Does this look off/out of proportion?

Looking for honest, impartial feedback from design-oriented folks before we finish the job and caulk/paint. Money/time is not really an issue, we would rather redo it if it doesn't look "right," but can't decide if it already looks "right," if that makes sense.

Any help would be sincerely appreciated. Thanks!!

Thank you all for the thoughtful responses. We purchased this home as a new construction a few years ago, tiny baseboards, uncased windows, and all. We didn't even notice how small the baseboards were until we started adding crown, and we were worried it would look ridiculous to the discerning eye. After seeing your responses, however, we feel much better about our choice. We are going to stick with it and add extending the baseboards (and adding window trim) to our to-do list. Thanks again!

Yes, the base molding should be taller. It looks like the hardwood flooring was installed after the fact and base molding was never raised. I see that a lot.

With that said, it is what is, but with all that stuff in the room, nobody will probably pay attention to that and if you cannot live with it, install a taller base molding.

Adam, I wouldn't have noticed if you hadn't asked. We have the same issue in two of our bedrooms. It doesn't bother me but I'm not a pro.

Oh, that's always a tough one. I tend to go with more traditional choices and would suggest match the crown. Painting trim/molding the same color as the walls comes with caveats. Biggest one is every time you want to change wall color, you also have to paint the trim. Well, I suppose you wouldn't have to but then that's a different approach altogether. From those pictures, it looks like you have some really intereting corners in your kitchen. Sometimes you just have to stand back and let go of how you think it should be and ask yourself, "Do I think that looks good?" Really, only your opinion matters. But since you asked us... Usually the trim corners do align with the cabinet corners. With your tricky angles though, I think the first three shown above look fine. The last one looks off to me only because it's different than the others, not because it itself looks wrong. But that's just my opinion.

Thank you Fori and Lynn2006 for your input, I really appreciate your help. My husband wants to just do molding on the cabinets, and one minute I like the idea and the next minute I'm scared the kitchen will look bare and unfinished. Anyone else want to give me their opinion?

I would leave it alone. However, the baseboards *do* seem under-sized...

The problem isn't the crown. It’s the teency base. You can add additional molding on the wall to visually extend it and build it up.
