Comments (14)I just got my Abe Darby this year as a Jackson Perkins rose from my local nursery. It's been doing great for me. I spray now, but before I started spraying, it never had the faintest bit of problems with blackspot/mildew/etc. I simply spray it now, because I spray everything just because I can. I think a lot of it, is just making sure you have Abe adequately fertilized to prevent disease. I grow my Abe Darby in a 20" container and have had no disease and it has been quite vigorous in growth and blooms. It is one of my most constant bloomers and the blooms last longer than most Austins since Abe Darby's parents are both hybrid teas to my knowledge. Beautiful super fruity scent, and the blooms......for me at least.....stay in a semi-globular manner with an apricot color and a pink hue to it....See MoreAbraham Darby
Comments (13)I guess they went back to the nursery and nobody could tell them if it was own root or not and they picked me up another JP Connell instead (which was my second choice). Mine is just starting to bloom (bought this year & so pretty!) I have a better chance of wintering over that rose than an Abe Darby, but still would love to have him someday. Was yours an own root or grafted Carol? I bought a body bag Graham Thomas at Home Depot in March and have it potted up and the buds are so heavy, that I have it staked. It is grafted, but am hoping to enjoy "him" for the summer (if it ever gets here) It weathered a 20 minute hailstorm well last night, but my canna's are toast Debbie...See MoreAbraham darby...
Comments (13)Here is my experience with Abe in Central Florida. It is a lovely rose, but unfortunately, the insects share my opinion. On the other hand, it is a fighter. I just started growing roses last year and then six months ago my mom bought a house and inherited an antique rose garden (Abe was in it, the only rose that wasn't an antique!). Anyways, in her garden, they were all neglected for the last two years because of emotional turmoil the previous owners had gone through culminating in divorce. Abe didn't get the best air circulation and suffered the worst blackspot of all the roses, even worse than Autumn Damask (this is in Lakeland, Florida). He has two blooms on him even though it is January and his leaves are black with green spots. In my yard minutes away (Plant City, FL), I put him against a chain link fence and I've never seen blackspot. From the moment I brought him home, though, the bugs have just loved him. NONE of my other roses have the problems he does. Perhaps he is such candy to them they forsake chewing on my other roses and go straight to him? I have no problem with spraying, but I suddenly faced a debilitating pregnancy and literally cried at times because I couldn't tend the roses I had just lovingly planted (Summer '05) and was so excited about as it was a brand new venture for me. So it was survival of the fittest in my garden. The pregancy will be over any day now and I got my energy back recently and have been in the garden since. I was pruning my roses just the other day when one was found to have cane borers (disgusting!!). Which one? Yep, Abe Darby. But he is still green as ever and ready to put out blooms!...See MoreLucky in FL with Roses in Pots? and My Abraham Darby!
Comments (9)Hi juneroses, It will depend on how you want to grow them on which source you should order from. If you want to just keep them in pots you could try own rootstock or grafted to non-fortuniana root stock varieties. If you plan to keep them in the ground long term and have nematodes then you may want to get them grafted onto fortuniana root stock. You can research more on this on the florida and rose forums and decide how you want to proceed. There are lots of different sources for DA roses besides just the DA website. There are a few places that do graft the DA roses onto fortuniana root stock. Two of them are K&M Roses and Cool Roses. For own root stock DA roses at lower prices that are usually smaller plants than the bare root roses and come in small pots. There is Chamblees Roses Nursery. Roses Unlimited also has them. If you do a google search you can find more. David Austin website also has own root and grafted onto non fort. root stock that are sold as bare root larger plants. If you sign up for a mail catalog from them they may send you a coupon code to use on your order. Finally some DA roses do better in the heat than others. I did some research on the rose forums to see which would probably work for me. I don't mind experimenting a little either lol. Usually the ones that stay smaller are better for pots but obviously a lot of people are growing the larger ones in pots and they are doing okay. If you keep them trimmed and can get it out to replenish the potting soil every few years they can do well. Hope this helps. I hope others can add some more sources and ideas for you. ~SJN...See Moresummersrhythm_z6a
