Lots of penny round

I check real estate on a national level nearly daily and I ran across this mostly sensitively restored modernist house with lots and lots of penny round in the bathrooms. I would not be happy with the appearance. I would think you would really need to make trim pieces to use it to this extent and I am not aware of any penny round trim.

I certainly wouldn't be happy with its appearance after a year or two under my care.

I saw that listing the other day and remember being conflicted about the penny rounds. I decided that, had penny rounds been as commonly available in that era as they are now, we likely would have seen some use of them by MCM builders/designers. Like traditional 1 x 1 or even 2 x 2 tile, they offer an uninterrupted neutral background. I think the problem I had with this particular installation was the visibility of the seams where the sheets meet. At first I wasn’t a fan of how the tiles worked on the niche, but then I realized it was probably a decent installation given the material choice. I do worry about relying on so much grout in a wet installation, but I’m not mad at it.

I've seen them at a couple of local tile shops here in the Bay Area. One company that makes them is a German company called Jasba. (They have a really interesting colour pallette). I've posted a link below - click around a bit to see more colours as the webpage is a weird layout. The other company I don't know the name of but I think it may be the same company that makes a lot of those 'dot and octagon' old fashioned tiles. I think. I would chose a cast iron base if that were an option, but the size is incorrect. I find the other options less appealing, but I think there is no reason to really research them.. Given that the person tasked with dealing with this is a tile contractor, I really doubt anything but a tile replacement is an option under the warranty. And honestly that seems fair to me. The tile contractor is going to be losing money on this. At least with tile replacement, he's getting whatever discount he can out of his suppliers and he's paying his own employees' wages to do the work. And I think like for like replacement is really all anyone can reasonably expect under a warranty. (And changing to a curbless shower and/or linear drain seems like an entirely unreasonable request. Those would require substantial changes to the shower build and would be a substantial up charge. No way do I have a basis to ask for that.) thank you!

No abrasives. Ever. No acidic or base cleaners. Ever. No Bon Ami. No Barkerpers Friend. In other words, no typical ”bathroom” cleaners at all. You can only use pH neutral cleaners and a brush as soft as a toothbrush. That’s it. Even scrubbing with that 2x weekly, you can get soap scum buildup if you dont switch to liquid body washes instead of bar soap. https://www.lowes.com/pd/Zep-Neutral-Floor-Cleaner-Concentrate-128-fl-oz-Vinyl-Floor-Cleaner/3621314 Metallics are high maintenance. The acids used in typical bath cleaners damages it. Penny rounds are high maintenance. They have twice the visible grout as most 2x2 porcelain that is typically used on a shower floor. Metallic pennies are double high maintenance. Some of the newer polyurethane style grouts that don’t need sealing are also contraindicated with the wider grout joints that penny or pebble has. Use a grout with fine aggregate. Like Ultracolor Plus FA.

Can you use mother of pearl penny round as floor tile?

The tile is beautiful, but I personally would be a quite weary of using it as a floor tile. I'm not a professional or a designer by any means, but I believe there's usually a rating provided to tell you how "hardy" the tile is so you know if it will stand up to a lot of weight and traffic. I didn't see that on the site for this particular style. I've always thought mother of pearl can be quite delicate as well, so I'm a little on the fence of using it for the floor. I wonder what the professionals on here will say though. I've heard from some that the tile from floor and decor is on the less durable side hence why the prices are relatively inexpensive and that they don't carry stock of any one style for long so be sure to get plenty just in case of future needs.

If I was doing something like this, I would use some type of quarter round, pencil liner or a mix of different trims to clean up the design.

When I did my son's bathroom last year, I made sure to pick a white subway tile line that had a few matching trim pieces available.
