I suggest the fastest solution will be by calling Apple Support (which you should be entitled to do for free with a new iPad), going to an Apple store, or checking on the Apple Forum.

Patricia, the iPad manual is included as bookmark on every iPad. You might start there, but the old Genius Bar at Apple would LOVE to assist you and likely a great service you can use at any time.

You don't necessarily need it backed up to iTunes. You can also back up to iCloud which is generally enabled by default on your newer devices. There's a chance all or some of your data is there rather than lost.

That said, to sync with iTunes, you connect the sync cable to your iPad and your computer, and then install and launch iTunes. When it detects a new device, it will assist you with setting it up. Once it's configured and ready to use, it will sync automatically when connected with the sync cable, and iTunes is open. You can change this setting, but it's generally best left on. You can also set it to sync over Wifi, but the iPad has to plugged in to power, and iTunes must be open and on the same home network. It's generally just easier to use the sync cable unless you leave iTunes open on your computer all the time and then it will just sync when you charge your laptop at home.
