Ogon 'Gold Rush' Dawn Redwood: is it smart; or what?
Comments (13)Horseman, your question about the growth rate is similar to what I am wondering. My tree has not added any height at all since it was planted last year. Neither does the trunk seemed to have thicken enough for me to perceive, if at all. If the late winter freeze issues had not distracted me, I would have been posting questions about the slow growth rate. Yesterday, I read on a website describing the cultivar, that the 'Gold Rush' cultivar does grow slower than the species. My 'Gold Rush' has a clean trunk about 3 feet up before the trunk forks of into two thin, flexible and arching, but still slightly branched and well leafed out trunks which makes up the canopy of the tree. It looks to me that the only reason the trunk is not branching out lower on the trunk is due to the way the grower pruned and trained the tree prior to shipping it to me. I planted mine in mid May of last year, and yes in the heat and drought of the summer the leaves did tend to want to turn brown. Whenever I saw the slightest amount of browning in the leaves, I would water the tree well, and each time, the leaves responded quickly, by changing again to their nice bright healthy color. Currently the leaves of my 'Gold Rush' look golden, and I can see some of the healthy bright green of the cultivar's normal spring leaf color trying to emerge from the base of those golden colored leaves....See MoreDawn Redwood Pics
Comments (7)Gook looking trees Lou. Many of us know how much thought and work you put into growing trees in Texas and that rugged soil of rock you work with. Those look real good. I would have guessed the first one was off-color due to high ph. I have an Abies firma here which reportedly can suffer extensively with ph's over 5.5, at least that's what I've heard. Anyway, my seedling has push on it that's tan like your above and first seedling you show us. I've got 7.0 ph. But your second seedling shows none of the effects of alkalinity. Congratulations! I hope they live man. I haven't previously known about (any) Dawn Redwoods where you live (Dallas - Ft. Worth area, right?). Dax...See MoreDawn Redwood Seedling Update Amazing Growth
Comments (66)August 3rd 2009. This seedling has exceptional characteristics and since I had no tape I guessed it to be 17 feet tall. My father is going to go measure it as I do not live close to it. You'll see the bark is normal red below and at all hte upper branches off of the main trunk there is a black blotch and the entire branches have curling/black tones/bark. The last photos show the very first year where the bark has had 2 years to age. It's really something. I think it has characteristics (I'll watch it for another five or ten years) to become cultivar material. Dax...See MoreShould I cut the top of Dawn redwood
Comments (8)Well something is growing at the top (although my eyesight is rubbish) so unless I am mistaken, I wouldn't be too quick to despair. 4ft is still a baby so yep, I am with Ken, sit tight and hang it out for a bit longer. Not sure I would be mucking about with laterals either...as long as it has enough moisture, leafage is good. 4 hours of good quality sunshine is not a disaster either - its about what mine gets. Still, not exactly experienced with huge trees so wait till someone a bit more knowledgeable chimes in....See Moredrizzypine75_zone_4
