Dawn Redwood Pics

Here are some pictures of two DR trees I started from seed. They are currently growing in the median behind my house. The first 3 are pics of a DR with new growth that is a different color. The last two pics are of a DR with growth that curls back. Just thought they were interesting.

Gook looking trees Lou. Many of us know how much thought and work you put into growing trees in Texas and that rugged soil of rock you work with. Those look real good. I would have guessed the first one was off-color due to high ph. I have an Abies firma here which reportedly can suffer extensively with ph's over 5.5, at least that's what I've heard. Anyway, my seedling has push on it that's tan like your above and first seedling you show us. I've got 7.0 ph. But your second seedling shows none of the effects of alkalinity.

Congratulations! I hope they live man. I haven't previously known about (any) Dawn Redwoods where you live (Dallas - Ft. Worth area, right?).

Actually I am Lou's brother. I live in Houston and the trees are planted in the median along the street behind my house. Of the 5 planted in the median it is the only one like that. The pH is probably close to neutral and it gets plenty of water from irrigation. I just figured the color was due to natural variation of the species, I just hadn't seen it in other seedlings I have grown.

Waas, thank you for bringing up Ogon. Ogon may be the most eye catching trees I have ever seen rivaling those fragile pink leaved beeches and growing more reliably. After seeing a twenty foot Ogon in Kansas City I ordered one. It grew almost a meter first year in the ground. About the same as my regular Metasequoia. I have seen only two or three of Ogons not counting Gardenweb. They SEEM slightly of slightly thinner habit than the species. (My Ogon does get a little more shade though) Just found a fastigate tulip on the Forest Farm site. Never seen one in person. I always imagine them ultra narrow trees in rows. Toronado3800, I also bought my tree from Arbor Day, good stuff..(second set of pics after your original post) How old is the one you have growing? Mine is only around 2.5 years old and already 6.5 feet. Dax, the one you planted in 2001, got very large quick. Amazing! On that particular tree, do happen to remember if you cut the lower branches off for health reasons, or just to get that rounded trunk. I have heard from some people, that if you leave the bottom branches it gives more of a gnarly look. I am kind of debating wether to remove lower branches or just leave em on my tree? Can't wait to see your 2008 plantings get larger, going to be a sweet grove of them. After seeing everyones 'Ogon', I think I will be getting one in the spring. : ) J

Jal, even the presence of fruiting bodies (mushrooms) emanating from near or on the roots is not necessarily evidence of something amiss. Again, I would refer you and any reader to mycorrhizal fungi-what they are, what they do, and the bewildering prevalence of these relationships in nature. Fungi are responsible for the greatest percentage of plant diseases, but the reverse is definitely not true-most fungi do not cause plant diseases!

The greenhouse when I checked it yesterday was 90 degrees, and I suspect it has gotten up to 100 several days in the summer. The greenhouse footprint is 12x25 ft, and its lowest height is 6ft. I adjusted the winter to summer schedule a few weeks after the freeze, and I decided on watering it every 1-3 days due to the fact that the soil mix I made has a ridiculous amount of drainage. After I placed the saplings in standard tree mix it went from 1-2 days to dry out to 3-4. I had a bedside humidifier running every day to simulate the fog that they would be getting normally, but stopped doing that. Would that change anything in particular? The greenhouse is in full sun, but I have two roof vents, two wall vents directly opposite from the swamp coolers, and the metal shutters are down, so that cuts down on sunlight-related heat as well.

I see that all the time with Dawn Redwoods but eventually they turn green. 10 of 10 seedlings I planted last year sometime look exactly like that. Not sure about this firma. It seemed like a correlation, however maybe not. It is interesting that the leader on my Abies firma is solid green and a few of the other buds that broke are solid green, it's the other 90% that has tan coloration. I'm glad I brought it up. Maybe somebody will write something.

Dax,

Soil in Houston varies greatly. It's a huge city. To the north/east, it becomes more sandy. South is silty type, I think. To the west, it becomes more clay-ish. Still much better than where I live.

Ltruett is my brother living in Houston. He likes to grow plants like I do. He has grown a lot of DRs and he doesn't know what to do with that many DRs so he went out there and planted them in the median.... I have too many bald cypress seedlings that I don't know what to do with...

I live in a relatively new neighborhood so they took all of the topsoil away and now it is mostly clay. Could be better but could be worse.

ltruett, looks like you get a fair amount of precipitation, there. 3-5" a month typically, so you should probably be able to grow a decent amount of conifers. Have you attempted any fir(s)? If your ph is high, you'd need to spread alfalfa meal or, pelleted sulphur, but I don't know your ph. I'd surely give firma and koreana a go there. I've got a ton of large koreana seedlings if you want one.
