Bath project starting soon, what do I look for in shower install
Comments (8)We are almost finished with our shower addition. I did take daily photos which I will put up on Pinterest once it's done. I will share that link with you probably end of this week. I just finished documenting day 20. They are mainly just doing touch up now. We are very happy with ours. I think different parts of the country do things differently. We are in Southern California. Building codes are pretty strict here. Waterproofing is key for sure. AND plumbing AND venting AND drainage. Make sure you check your contractor's license to make sure it's active with no complaints. Good luck with your project....See MoreI want to install all porcelain tiles inside my home, where do i start
Comments (5)I would get myself over to Yelp, and research local flooring stores that sell product AND do installation. Read through all the reviews. Get a comfort level that you can work with the folks in the store, and that they stand behind their products and work. Even more important when you're doing the whole house--it's a big project! When things go wrong, and you can read through many, many threads about that, the manufacturer points at the installation, and the installer points at the manufacturer. It is an uphill battle, it can get $$$legal$$$, and when I put flooring in our whole downstairs, I was (rarely for me) less concerned about saving $1/sf than I was concerned about not having anything go wrong, and in the event something did go wrong, having a long-standing store with LEVERAGE over the manufacturer to reduce my risk. I'm glad I went the way I did, and after all my questions, I went with the decades-old family-run store with the great reputation across town. They made great recommendations, and made sure to offer me all my options/upgrades up front, and didn't try to talk me out of anything that was important to me: (e.g. I asked for no quarter round to have a sleeker look of baseboard meeting flooring). Be sure to ask about additional costs for moving furniture, and which crew they will send. In my case, they sent their "best" crew (most experienced), and I agreed to wait for them. They picture-framed our hearth (mitered corners-looks great), and "beefed-up" a stair step that leads to our front door, making it wider/safer--at no extra charge. There are things that a homeowner might not know about (cheap glue?), moisture issues if you're on a slab, etc. These are just my thoughts and experience. You can also read through a lot of threads in this flooring forum to see what goes wrong for folks, and get a better idea of what questions to ask. Good luck!...See MoreSo what metal things do I need to get for my new tub/shower install?
Comments (2)Delta is a good moderately priced line. Both Moen and Delta make excellent products for the money. You should select the valves you want in terms of style and then tell your plumber what you have selected. He will then be responsible for ordering all the correct components and ensuring they are not defective and are there when he is scheduled to do the work. I just finished a remodel and I made the design decisions and then left the purchasing up to my the professionals. In other words, you shouldn't be doing the shopping but should go to a good plumbing store to look at styles in person and then tell your plumber what styles you want....See MoreCan I build a shower to conver to steam later??
Comments (9)"If you where to DIY, which steps specifically would you leave for the pros?" Biggest thing is getting the vapor-proof shower cube done correctly. "Cube" as in four walls, floor, and ceiling. Consider looking at something like USG's Durock lightweight foam board as the tile backer for the cube. The foam board will offer some insulative value, which can help when creating and retaining steam. The USG system has pitched floor panels, so the slope is already there. Easy. You can buy a stock size floor pan, or they'll fabricate a custom size for you in about a week's time. Then the wall panels. Follow the detailing instructions. Fasteners, corners, panel seams, etc. It's not difficult. You just have to pay attention to the details. You'll want to plan for the shower door, any grab bars, the steam port pass-through location, the steamer controls, etc...do all that ahead of time. Install blocking during the framing stage so door hinge screws will find proper purchase. Figure out all of those locations. The steam vent usually has a special high temp membrane patch where it goes through the wall, install that now since it's part of the vapor-proofing. You can place the fitting and cap it on the back side. Figure out all of the wiring. Plumbing. Steamer location. If the steamer will be remote, you can do everything except install the generator. Tile selection is important. natural stone sure looks purdy, but not is it's continually moist from steam drive. Chose a nice porcelain tile. If you're a competent tiler, you can handle the tiling. Glass doors? Gaskets for those doors? Any penetrations in the membrane need to be vapor-proof. Lighting, speakers, etc, the housings need to be vapor-tight and gasketed. Build it fifty times in your head, have it all worked out on paper, before you start construction. Step-by-step....See MoreUser
