territorial humingbird with human hatred?
Comments (14)I am 62yrs old and medically retired so I really don't have much to do in the course of my day. As a consequence I spend a good portion of my day sitting on the back steps and watching all the birds and wildlife in our yard. About three weeks ago we noticed a hummingbird coming in to the flower bed beside the back steps so Mother got a hummingbird feeder and hung it on a metal shepherds hook about arms length from the steps where I usually sit. Within an hour the hummingbirds started coming to the feeder. At first they seemed a bit standoffish at my presence on the step, but they soon overcame that. If i sit motionless they come right in and I have opportunity to observe them not more than 3' away, and as was mentioned above, some of them go to the feeder, then fly right up to my face and hover there looking at me, as if to say thank you before they fly off. Today I got the shock of my life when one of the hummingbirds first went to the feeder, then flew over to me, bur rather than hover in front of my face as I expected, is actually landed on my knee, not more that 8" from my hand and sat there a good 4 or 5 minutes before taking flight again. This was the first time in my life that I actually got to see a hummingbird with its wings at rest....See Moreyear-old home, link to pictures, LONG with details
Comments (14)Thanks so much for all of your kind comments! Lnersesian, I just posted a floor plan in photobucket. Sorry for the delay - all of our "official" floor plans are on giant architect-sized paper, not scanable with what I have here at home, so I just sketched one out. The walls are easy to identify but some of the notes I made aren't so easy to read, I apologize... if you have questions, I'll check back from time to time so I can answer them. At least it gives you an idea about the flow. The exposed beams are another idea we took from "Not So Big House." It gives a sense of separation between the living, dining and kitchen because it is all one room. It is nice to have den as an "away room" from the noise of the TV at times. carolyn53562, we used fir wainscoting in the downstairs bath. It was old - about 75 years - stored in my parent's garage all these years. They never used it and no longer wanted it. It was darker than some of the newer fir we bought because of its age. We just used a clear lacquer finish on it. The bay window is great for letting in morning light. The dining/island area could be a little dark without it, although it is nicely lit in the afternoon. I haven't made a cushion for that area yet, but anticipate it will be a nice reading spot when that's done. Last winter we did feel like we were living in a postcard! I love the quiet of snowfall... it was mud city when it melted though! Thanks again for all of your nice comments. It has been so inspiring to see all of the finished homes here, I just had to share our own....See MoreNeed help picking a color for the exterior stucco. (Long)
Comments (57)Love your house! I second to not remove the shutters as they balance out the narrowness of the windows. You have a big, solid looking house and without them the proportions of the windows seem to be a bit off. They also give a visual break to the expanse of walls unless you could add some wide trim around the windows. Your house has a commanding presence and I think it would look stunning in a darker color which would also stand out from all the other houses in your neighborhood. I also would take a sample of your flagstone and get it color matched when it is wet. Below is just an example. Wonder if someone could photoshop a dark color with white shutters just to give you a comparison to the light colors above and see if you would like it....See MoreHow many different pros / tradespeople worked on your house this year?
Comments (55)If it's a service, they've been to my house... roofer, plumber, electrician, architect, designers, general contractors, cabinet makers, granite installers, sheet rockers, texture person, window installers, painters, more painters, arborist, landscape architect, glass installer, appliance repair people (fridge, and washing machine), concrete repair people, carpet installers, tile layers (like 10 of them!!) fence installers... sigh. Worst year of my life! Biggest remodel we've ever done... shudder. Now I need a pharmacist, wine salesman and therapist to help me recover... ;)...See MoreChristina H
