Comments (2)Sure it's OK to put the glass lid on as a cover. Many tradtional crocks used to come with lids. The more air you keep out the less likelihood of yeast, etc. that you'll have to skim. Do still lift the lid and check the cukes regularly. Carol...See Moreusing a crock pot for making sauce, safe?
Comments (7)Mine isn't all that new, probably 10 years old. Kinda ugly, I just replaced the knob on the lid with one for a kitchen drawer. It is a Rival brand, oval shaped, I forgot the capacity. But it is big enough to put a whole turkey breast inside. It has 3 settings High will boil, low will slow cook, and it has a warm setting that is perfect eating temp. Speaking of turkey breast, I partially thaw a turkey breast in the fridge overnight , about 18 hours usually. Put it in the crock pot the next morning with the cavity up. Pour a can of Golden mushroom soup in the cavity and turn it on high for 2 hours. Then switch it to low for 4 hours. It turns out perfect!...See MoreOld Crock Pot ?'s
Comments (17)I have three crock pots. Two of the larger ones that the crock comes out of and one smaller one that the crock doesn't come out of. I would say go for the bigger one. I have four kids and there are times a large frozen roast or even a small ham hardly fits in it. One of mine was a wedding gift years ago the other two I bought at yard sales. I use them all the time. I like having extras because around here when someone dies we all take food to the family and I can take a nice hot pot of soup in my crock pot and all they have to do it plug it in. Having extras I don't worry about being without my crockpot and the family is usually thrilled with a hot meal. I use the address labels to mark my top, the crock and the base. I also write my name with permanent marker. You can usually pick crock pots up at yard sales around here for under $5....See MoreThat ole crock joyful, with minimal pot .. and his crock-pot adventure
Comments (20)Hi handy jemdandy, Even with a regular crockpot (which one wouldn't consider using as suggested), what with the heating unit being somewhat below the pot, and the pot having a thick wall and all, and being fairly high to the rim ... one'd have to turn the thing on quite a long time before need in order to achieve the warmth that you suggest ... ... or so it seems to me. With my old crock, that didn't work on "low" and on "high" took about 48 hours all told to soften the veggies ... one'd have to turn it on a day (or two?) ahead, I think, to achieve anything like that level of warmth at the point of contact. just thinkin. additional thinkin ... guys don't sit, do they? Oh, right - as I've said for years - civilized guys sit down to pee. Or, as a former parishioner lady, who had a husband and a couple of boys, said years ago ... it they weren't going to sit to pee - they cleaned the bathroom. She (a fairly heavy smoker, died about three years ago - that's right: lung cancer). ole joyful...See More- 6 years ago
