Stainless Steel Apron Sink: A Fad or will it Pass the Test of Time?
Comments (56)Yes, jerzeegirl. I tend to kneejerk negatively against the whole term "out-dated". I think the bones of the house should dictate whether you go more traditional, modern, cottage, farmhouse, industrial, etc. To me, if the general style fits the style of the home, you're golden for decades. Of course, then your own personal tastes come into play as well. If you combine those well, I think a kitchen should stand the test of time quite well. I've been in homes with 80 year old kitchens that look fantastic. Sure, there may have been appliance updates and other tweaks over the years but if the original materials were good enough quality to still be in good condition and, of course, the layout is functional, and it suits the home and owner's tastes, why update just because of trends and fads? Of course, if the kitchen is crumbling or has a dysfunctional layout, go ahead and remodel but choose items that fit the house. Of course, I'm assuming here that someone bought that Victorian because they appreciate that style of architecture and so their tastes will match up with the types of kitchens that should be in a Victorian or Cape Cod, or Tudor or Ranch or MCM or whatever. When I say this I'm not really speaking about appliances. An electric stove with coil burners might be age appropriate to most homes but I doubt any of us lust for one of those anymore. And the last time we had this discussion, someone popped in with amazingly modern kitchens put into centuries old European buildings. OK, that contrast was striking and those types of structures were never built with any kind of kitchen as we know it today. so I'm not talking about those kinds of extreme situations. Getting back to farmhouse sinks, whether it's a good choice for a particular kitchen depends on the style of the kitchen and the owner's taste. And in 20-30 years when you redo your kitchen or someone buys your home and remodels, the farmhouse sink may stay or go. Don't worry about it. Do what you like and works for you and your kitchen's style....See MoreContrasting perimeter/island counter advice
Comments (12)I did absolute black on perimeters and marble on the island. I did the contrast because I was too afraid to have marble everywhere and knew I would do most of my prep work on the cooktop wall. Now that I have (and LOVE) the marble, I might have done the all white kitchen. On the other hand, I was surprised by how much of a show-stopper the absolute black is and could see choosing that throughout as well. I think it is a matter of personal taste. If going with two-toned, I like the darker on the perimeter and lighter on the island. A side note on quartz-marble look-a-likes. Make sure to see the full slab before making a decision. A lot of the pics online and small samples look awesome, but seeing several full slabs might change your mind. It did for me as the quartz looked repetitive, too perfect, manmade (...trying to find nicer synonym for fake) IMHO....See MoreContrasting kitchen island or not?
Comments (35)IIRC, Nikki had mentioned on the previous thread that she might eventually give cooking demonstrations on the island, so I believe buehl put the DW in that location to keep it out of the island prep zone--one could turn and load to the open DW, without the risk of tripping over the door if it was directly behind. I would leave the prep sink on the left side, as you face the island, but you could move the MW drawer over to match the offset of the ovens on the right, which would leave more room between the table and island. It would also push the sink a few inches closer to the cooktop, and you wouldn't need the clipped corner. I generally like clipped/diagonal corners, but I think the island should be symmetrical....See MoreHGTV flipping homes fads and trends.
Comments (66)With Sophie/Holly playing off against each other like the Patty Lane/Cathy Lane (Patty Duke Show), only in drag. O.o Not sure how I ended up in such august company, but I'm not sure I would make a sufficient foil for Sophie. Lackey, maybe. Heh. I am so far out of HGTV's target market, I can't even see it from my backyard. In fact, we're so far out of that "mainstream" market that we can't even find what we want without REALLY hunting. HGTV shows don't really give me ideas, beyond "what not to do." Whereas I grew up watching This Old House with Dad (a frustrated fine carpenter by nature, systems analyst by trade), and then right into the New Yankee Workshop. Lots of this education has made it into our new build. The fine carpenter on the job is either going to love me or hate me. In my opinion, to answer the OP: Everything you see on HGTV is likely to be trendy and dated. Not a whiff of it respects the era of the house or attempts to convey the solidity of actual craftsmanship. Then again, few people really want that. They want the shinies. It's OK if you're really going to flip or stage a home. (I have to do some serious work on my 1940's cape to sell it once we get our house up. I'll probably actually use a few of the "trends" there to inexpensively make it attractive to Millenials - who are most of our target market for a little starter house). I wouldn't go anywhere near any of it for a house I meant to keep. Everything that looks "fresh" and new now will look old and tired in 5-10....See MoreSabrina Alfin Interiors
