I'd put DW on other side of sink out of the path to cooktop. I personally would skip the prep sink since it's further away from main sink

What will your floor be? If it is not wood, consider a wood island to bring in the warmth of wood. If your floor is wood, then I would just do as you like:)

What do you think about the contrasting main kitchen and island?

I am between hardwood and engineered one. I like hardwood, but squeaky sound drives me. I have 21/4 oak now I am thinking to change it 4 or 5" one. I am pretty flexible. I am also thinking to put tile all over inc. living room with under heater, but I live in Midwest and not a common thing here. So I am craving for solution

Do you love the look of a contrasting island? If yes, then do it! If not, well.... don't. It's totally up to you. I had a contrasting island and thought I would repeat that with my new kitchen, but in the end decided on a waterfall counter and matching cabinetry. What will make you smile every day?

I like the waterfall idea, but I have a 2x2' column to support the house. I like the contrasting, but I am not a visual person color wise. Not artistic:) I thought linen color cabinets and gray tone island with the same mainly white with large gray lines quartz counter top. Does that work? I also like the wood island, then do I need to match the floor or not?

On the other hand I structurally I can visual and add or change almost anything, but colors are my week point. One more thing I can bake and cook hours.

Wood stain doesn't need to match floor but should coordinate.

Whether you contrast the island or not is a personal choice. I chose to contrast the counters instead. As for the prep sink, I would never be without one again! You have a very large island and trust me, you will use that sink all the time. For help with visuals, my island is 10 X 5 and the prep sink in the island is the Stages 33". Having the cutting board insert is so useful for all the prep work.

@Jen, that is a nice color combination. Who is your cabinet maker? What kind of counter top will you use?

@muskokascp This is very nice kitchen. Is it frameless? What kind of cabinets are those? I have two column on each side of the cabinets. With those island will be 12x4 almost. I am thinking to put 24" prep sink. Do you think that will be enough? One more question: Did you use garbage disposal for both sink?

What about the wall color? Looks nice and timeless.

That is my dilemma also. I kind of like the one on the right.

I'd definitely move the dishwasher to the other side of the sink.

I like the look of a contrasting island, especially if the countertop will be the same as the perimeter.

Annette Holbrook(z7b) I do have only two upper cabinets by the oven. I am also planning to have 2nd garbage can by the main sink. I put the dishwasher to the left side, because the cabinets on the right and left of DW can be used for plates. I am still questioning if I need the 2nd garbage can by the main sink.

With the columns and everything I'm not sure if a contrasting color of the cabinets would be very noticable. It may just look like a lot going on in the space with the table so close too if you do a different countertop. It would be three different materials in very close proximity.

I would install everything needed for the sink, but maybe not do the cutout and doing the actual sink install and see you feel about it after working in the kitchen. It does seem like it is needed if you will use the island for prep, but then again you may find that you rather work in the other space closer to the cooktop and use the island for other things that doesn't require water. It might function better if the sink was closer to the stove, however it would be feeling like the faucet was slightly in the way when moving to the cooktop.

I really like Buehl's plan, but there is one thing that bothers me and that is the small distance between the table and the island. When somebody is sitting at the table in that spot the island becomes a hip buster with that corner. I did a modification of sliding things down some and still leave the size the same, but angle that corner to make the entry a bit more welcoming and allow a little more space around the table. It would still work with the column being there, but not seen as being as much of an obstacle. You might want to angle it a little earlier than I drew too.

The second sink isn't going to get use in this layout.

The second sink is for prep. I do Mediterranean food which has lots of veggies.

I also make own bread. What is your suggestion?

Move closer to the cooktop. Or another option is get a 45" Kohler stages as your main sink with two faucets

I'd do one of the following

1. Have a good main sink large enough to handle prep and disheshes as you cook and no prep sink on the island so it can be clear dor baking

2. Add a prep sink on the other side of the island of where Buehl placed it so when doing prep of veggies etc for salads and other things not needed for a stove you have it there and if you ever have more than one cook it can be back up for prep with food going to the cook top or for things you assemble to put in the oven. Reason for switching sides to me also has something to do with sight lines. It is more hidden on the other side and I like having the sink on my right side when working too.

IIRC, Nikki had mentioned on the previous thread that she might eventually give cooking demonstrations on the island, so I believe buehl put the DW in that location to keep it out of the island prep zone--one could turn and load to the open DW, without the risk of tripping over the door if it was directly behind. I would leave the prep sink on the left side, as you face the island, but you could move the MW drawer over to match the offset of the ovens on the right, which would leave more room between the table and island. It would also push the sink a few inches closer to the cooktop, and you wouldn't need the clipped corner. I generally like clipped/diagonal corners, but I think the island should be symmetrical.

I did Kohler stages vs two sinks as well. It works wonderfully!
