Caught in the act ...

Something has been messing with my beautiful and highly valued Evergreen sumac.

To find out what it was all I had to do is stand still for about 30 seconds and a half dozen of these little guys, possibly this species of leaf cutter bees, returned to their busy jobs of collecting leaves to line their nests.

.

Unlike some species of leaf cutter bees, there are hundreds of different kinds, these don't make neat circular cut outs like those I've seen on rose leaves. These bees leave a ragged edge.

I don't know if they are specific in their choice of leaves; I don't see any other leaves taken, but if they are I'm glad I have the evergreen sumac because leaf cutter bees are very efficient pollinators.

Some wild bees are said to be 20 times more efficient at pollinating than honey bees are so I don't begrudge the leaves they've taken.

The leaves are growing back very quickly and nesting season will soon be over.

.

I'm seeing very few honey bees so far. How about you?

My Satsuma citrus tree is in full bloom and I had to stand and look for several minutes before I saw just one honey bee.
