Training Monstera deliciosa
Comments (6)In the wild, this plant uses its aerial roots to attach itself to the bark of trees. The plant must be trained to grow upright if you want the leaves to get larger and develop more splits. I am guessing that the moss poles don't work that well because they don't have a coarse enough texture for the roots to attach too. Like njoasis says, I've even had Pothos attach itself to a wall all by itself. Pothos will also grow larger leaves if trained upright. I have seen them even develop splits just like Monstera. The reason the leaves develop splits is because it is a natural defense against winds at the top of trees that the plant climbs. The wind will blow thru the leaves instead if tearing it. So I would try and find a piece of wood that has a very coarse texture...even bark on it if you can...See MoreMonstera Deliciosa Q :)
Comments (1)By nature they climb. The leaves will grow larger and look nicer too if you have it grow upright. Plus it can get pretty big and attach itself to near-by things you may not want it to if you let it go any which way it hangs....See MoreTraining a Monstera deliciosa
Comments (6)I make my totems for philodendrons and other climbers in the greenhouse by taking a length of PVC pipe and wrapping it with coir fiber. I use monofilament line to tie the coir on. I have the capability to make my totems as tall as I want using "snap clamps", those nifty things they sell to use to attach poly sheeting to PVC pipe greenhouses. So I start with a totem about 4-5 ft tall, and when a plant reaches the top, I snap on a snap clamp and another 4-5 ft length and wrap that with coir. I attach them to the greenhouse walls and steel supports with aluminum wire. To train a plant up a totem, just get some of those long (about 10-12 inches) paper covered twist ties that they sell at Home Depot, set the trunk of the plant against the totem, and attach it with the ties in a few places. The long roots you are talking about will usually fall onto the ground (or pot) and root into the soil, the newly emerging roots will start to grow into the totem...See MoreMore questions about Monstera Deliciosa
Comments (1)You're right, if you cut off the leafy growth at the ends of the vine it will just produce more new growth at the end again. If you cut up the scrawny stems and plant them you'll get a lot of new growth and consequently a lot of leaves. But light levels need to be high. You must be careful with that, the losers (leaves) in the competition for light will wither and fall....See MorePhoto Synthesis
