HELP...would love this European White Oak coloring in vinyl flooring

HELP... so we recently bought a house that has 1,000 ft downstairs of kitchen, living room and dining room covered in ceramic tile and the other 1000 sq ft upstairs for 4 bedrooms covered in cheap dark brown laminate. We've been trying to search for lighter coloring (rustic/reclaimed) and then we were trying to decide on engineered vs vinyl tile (not sure if I can lay engineered over tile(.

Anyways a few guys have come and all suggested vinyl...but it all feels do plastick-y and I dont think looks and feels as nice as wood. I've been shopping around for months and I just wanna pick one before I drive my husband crazy.

Anyway all the new vinyls coming out do seem higher quality and nice though I'm looking for that European Oak coloring such as in the picture attached...but I can only find it in engineered hardwood. Does anyone have any suggestions for different vinyl brands with this color flooring? Thank you, Danielle

Karndean Korlok washed butternut or Baltic limed oak might work.

Don't expect thin vinyls (anything less than 8mm thick) will go over tiles. The tiles have to be removed OR they have to be "sunk" in cement.

Thin vinyl will show all imperfections of the substrate below them. That means all the grout lines in the tile will show through.

If you MUST leave the tile in place (I never recommend this) then please look at laminate. And most engineered hardwoods do not like going over tile either.

There are dozens of different versions of the European Oak look in vinyl. Just keep looking.

Thanks...these are the two types of tiles and the brown one is actually wavy.. and in the dining and living room.

Ugh now I've had 3 different flooring guys come in and said they could lay over tile but they would put a layer of thinset over it to even it out...would that work?

As for European Oak...I have found tons in hardwood but not in vinyl...do you have any brands and names as suggestions...very natural looking is what I'm after? thanks

swingrove85 keep in mind that many of the prefinished Euro/French White Oak options have a finish that uses reactive stains to get a particular color. If you sand of that finish it may be difficult or impossible to recreate on site. Thats why many options use WOCA oil or similar to service the product.

European Oak Flooring in LVP or laminate?

Make sure you look for a water resistant laminate because most laminates don’t like water. We were looking at AtroGuard laminate by Lamett, but have since decided to install SPC (stone polymer composite) rigid plank SuperCore flooring from WeShipFloors.com. It’s not bothered by moisture and humidity, and living in Mississippi that’s a real plus. With the laminate we would have to run dehumidifiers 24/7 to maintain the 40-60% humidity to keep it happy during the summer and humidifiers in winter to maintain the humidity during cold weather when the heat has to be on. Most of the water resistant laminates are surface water protected for up to 72 hours, but if water gets under it the floor can be ruined. The Flooret Modin SPC plank has some colors you might like and so does SuperCore. It’s definitely worth reading up on the newcomer SPC since it can take temps much higher than LVP and WPC (wood polymer composite) vinyl plank flooring and is much more stable in sunlight. I also suggest you read a lot about laminate since you stated you are looking for flooring that will be durable with water. IMHO, the SPC flooring will fit your needs better. There are some companies that have a tile look SPC if that interest you. It may take some research to find them, but they’re out there. Good luck in your flooring search. I really suggest you do some reading on both types of flooring and then decide what you think will work best on a concrete slab in Florida that needs to stand up well to water with humidity, kids and a dog in the picture.

The grey one looks decent with the island color, but I think it'll end up looking drab or cold overall, and you'd probably need a different rug with it. I do not like the pale one with the color of the island. I like both of the other two: The dark one could pull more elegant and gives nice contrast, but it also may show more salt and sand and dust. The medium toned one is a nice classic neutral floor color that she could take in any direction.

CoreTech has a version of it.

And the tile you are showing is going to be a BEAR to cover up. They will have to sand them (yes...sand them), then use PRIMER, and then sink them in cement. Those highly textured tiles will be horrible underneath vinyl.

If you have them removed = $2/sf.

If you sink them in concrete = $1.50 - $2.00/sf

Hmmmmm....might as well get rid of them.

When you say "sink them in cement"..they have been sunk in grout no? Yes I'm concerned that they won't be truly flat enough to put something over

The surface must be SMOOTH AND FLAT. The tiles must be COVERED in cement. To do that, they must be sanded, primed and then COATED in concrete. The cost is roughly the same as removing them (which is ALWAYS the right thing to do). And if you coat them in cement, you will RAISE THE FLOOR by another 1/4" - 1/2" + the new floor.

Your concerns are correct. The coating the tiles is *possible but not the best way to go about it (but it is *easier on the guys).

It's common to fill the grout lines with patch to smooth things out but you could likely go with an SPC core vinyl (limestone) without doing this. To SJ McCarthy's point, thinner vinyls will conform to the tile. I doubt you'd have to do an 8mm vinyl though as SPC-core's are now coming in thinner sizes.

Have you looked at republic flooring? The great Oregon oak line is pretty good! Here are some pics of the water oak, sessile and country aspen. We are going with the sessile. But this is the most realistic doc I have seen!

@Danielle O'Connor hi there, just hoping you might give an update on your Sweet Talker. I just placed my order (after searching for a year, so there’s no looking back!) and my install is also over tile. Did you end up doing a lot of floor prep? Have you had any issues? Thanks in advance!

@Ashley Lathrop it was not on back order and I received my delivery on Friday. It’s not installed yet, but I’m very happy with the 2 boxes I have laid out in my living room. Also very happy not to be searching for floors anymore! :)
