Need ideas for "non spillable" bar top! Open to any/all suggestions

We are in the beginning stages of finishing our basement. We will have a bar facing the TV and fireplace. In front of the bar will be our sofa. We are trying to think of and idea so that if a spill happens on the bar, it will not go on the couch. Are there ideas out there? Thinking some sort of rim to stop it. However, I am worried about how this will look. We are open to bar top materials. It will be 9 feet long.

Well, you could add a small lip to the edge. That would stop it. I don't think it would look bad or weird. Probably it would be completely unnoticeable unless someone looked for it. Or you could have a groove cut into the edge. That would catch it but is likely to get super nasty. Or you could scotchguard your sofa and hope for the best!

Another idea is to use a lower sofa table and chairs in place of the bar. Generally it isn't comfortable to sit on a sofa with a counter directly behind and above your head...

That is what I was thinking was a lip or rim, I don't know if you can just go into a countertop "place" and have them do that!

or beer bottle caps, labels, broken bits of glass. You can get really creative with epoxy resins. Make sure you use the right material for the job. There are different resins for base coats and filling in the voids, and ones for the topcoats. The top coat resins are designed to level out to make a uniform finish coating of about 1/8" thickness. This resin is tough, and designed to withstand heavy wear. The filling resin is designed to perform over a much wider range of thickness, from a thin binder coat, to over an inch in thickness in a single pour. This resin is not tough enough for surface wear. It needs an overcoating of the finish resin. A note about working with resins: Follow the instructions PRECISELY! If it says equal parts, use equal parts. I use disposable cups for this. If it says mix for 2 minutes, then pour it into a new container, use a new stir stick, then mix for another 2 minutes scraping the sides and bottom of the container... etc, etc.. You get the idea. Follow the instructions. Have many disposable containers, cups, and stir sticks. Use electricians tape to mask off the bottom edge, where drips will form.

thanks for the input guys! i had pondered the idea of moving that whole wall of cabinets to the right, but realized in doing that the stove would move. i can only move stove a couple of inches to the right (make that 2'), and still be able to fit my waist inside the corner without hip-checking the stove every time. What i really need to be able to completely open the freezer door (past the first point where the door holds it self open) as i can the refrigerator door. That requires 5 3/8'. I have 3/4' i can gain just by tightening up the 12' base cabinet closer to the stove, add another 2' by shifting all the cabinets to the right, but i'm still short 2 1/2'. These cabinets are 14 yrs old, i know i cannot get doors for them anymore, i've tried both lowe's and home desperate, so i'm thinking if i can find a carpenter to make them 9', and move everything down to the right, i might be able to hit it! I cannot modify the opening as the last poster was correct, it's a 8' tall patio door. With our kitchen reno, we had medium dark cherry cabs put in with Silestone counters is Dark Canyon ( a brown, black & cream fleck). I found these rubberwood stools in a dark cherry stain with black leather upholstery for our eating area online. They're made by Berkline and the style is York. They're very comfortable and extremely well made, even having a nice metal strip around the top of the footrest, so that shoes don't scrape of the finish. They are quite heavy, though.

Yes but its not just the desired look. If cost is not a factor, anything is possible. But if you have not done a lot of remodeling, you may not be aware of all the associated costs with changing all this. The ceiling, the lighting, framing out the window and wall, matching and replacing the existing exterior. While maintaining the exterior design balance. Moving plumbing, gas and electrical. Your house was built for this kitchen so everything you are considering has major expense to change. You might be better off as far as function and design to bump out the back and redo the whole thing.

Hello Michelle Currence,

You can basically do anything with countertop no matter the material. You could also use a wooden rim edge, something similar to a boat galley. Here are a couple of images for reference. One uses the countertop material (solid surface) with the back rim topped with wood. The other uses just wood as the rim. Both would be pleasing to the eye.

What you want is called a "marine edge", so named because it was originally used on boats. It's easily done on solid surface products (Corian etc.) or stainless steel. The depth can be chosen for your needs, 1/2 inch is usually sufficient for a non-boat install. I'm including this on my MB vanity top...it saves the front of the vanity from water damage.
