Dark stain on Red Oak v. White Oak Flooring
Comments (6)I went with white oak also because I didn't want red undertones. My flooring co said red oak will usually have red undetones regardless of what color stain is applied. Mine are stained with a mix of 75% Jacobean and 25% Coffee Black (similar to Dark Walnut from the more common stain company). I love them! Not so dark that the show every single speck of dust or cat hair. That sounds like a cleaning nightmare to me! And shout out to Nini whose floor is my inspiration. She graciously supplied her formula to me so I could try to replicate her beautiful floors!...See Morenew hardwood (white oak) finishing issues
Comments (18)I just recently did these sealers and finishes to my floor myself. It was a long and tedious process. The contractor didnt want to spend the time doing it right so i did it myself. I did it exactly as bona said. I applied two coats of the bona nordic seal 4 hours apart, then waited 24 hours to apply a third coat. I waited another day before i put on the finish after making sure the floor was completely clean by using a barely damn microfiber mop. For the finish, you have to do the coats within 3 hours of each other or the finish hardens too much (in the directions). After all those coats, no abrasion was needed because the floor was completely smooth. the trick with these sealers and finishes is to apply them at that magical point when they arent too dry or too wet. I also used a pad for the application because it was easier to use in my opinion: way way easier to get an even coat. The directions for both products explained that the sealer ”protects the wood from the finish”. So it absolutely warns not to apply the finsh to raw wood. here is a picture of the floor directly after the second coat of the finish. We are in the process of updating the house, so excuse the 1930s vibe here, lol. we started with the floors. Also, these products dry incredibly fast. One has to have a good work ethic to get them on. You have to be quick and methodic about applying even coats....See MoreWhite oak flooring...stain or clear coat? Products recommended?
Comments (4)White Oak, if going with a natural water based finish, will require a sealant. The sealant prevents tannin pull (yellows and some light greens moving to the surface of the wood). So long as the sealant is used, a clear coat will look the same as what your wood looks like if you wet it with water. You can choose the level of gloss. I'm fond of Satin, but people who like more shine will work well with the semi-gloss. I'm a fan of Loba 2K Supra AT. It is IMPRESSIVE. It's toughness when working with a 3 coat system is one of the best finishes you can achieve from a site finished hardwood. Bona Traffic HD is another tough finish. Again, when used with 3 coats it is potentially the toughest finish on the market. Both of these are into the $180+ per gallon but WELL worth the cost. Both companies offer their own stains. A WELL compensated flooring professional will be able to offer stain patches for you to view on your own floors. They will also apply a single coat of your finish over the colour patches. It is the only true way to view a stain....See MoreWhite oak hardwood with no stain and just Bona Traffic?
Comments (3)Thank you! Floors are done! We ended up putting Bona Classic and 3 coats of Traffic HD. I love how it turned out and I don't regret single bit not going with Natural or Nordic seal. I don't want to post pictures because it looks way more yellow on camera than in the real life but I have super natural looking white oaks floors now....See Moremarrymaid
