Paint Design Dilemma Exterior

Exterior Paint -- Sherwin Williams Duration Sheen

Has anyone used Sherwin Williams Duration in satin for exterior body and gloss for trim? If so, are you pleased with the results?

The body of our house is painted brick and wood siding. We're color matching Benjamin Moore colors Silver Fox for the body and Oxford White for the trim. Our contractor prefers Sherwin Williams paint. Otherwise, I'd go with Ben Moore low lustre on the body.

Thank you so much for your feedback klfische! One of the reasons I was leaning toward satin instead of flat on the body was potential durability issues. Glad to hear a real life example that it's not a problem.

Sherwin Williams Duration Satin is what I've used twice on my house. I have the fake wood fiber type board. I used the gloss on trim. Since this type of siding is prone to deterioration I want to use a high quality and highly protective paint, so went with satin. I know a few homes in my immediate area that didn't use better paint have had issues with siding. Mine is fine. The gloss bothers some people I've seen comment on online boards. I like that the rain sheds off the siding. Homes painted with flat almost look like they stay wet. My home was originally painted with flat, much happier with satin.

This paint is very thick. It covers really well, almost didn't need a second coat to change colors. I painted myself with a roller and brush. If using a painter will they use a sprayer? I am sure that that paint would need thinning to spray. Be sure they use what SW sells and use their recommendations for spraying.

Nope, ya gotta do two coats. Especially exterior. I'm a fan of SW Duration as much as anyone else, but I've never seen one coat look good. That second coat is what turns the corner for color resolution and everything else visual. Can't really speak to how one coat wears because 1. in general, it hasn't been that long that Duration has been on the exteriors I've been involved with and 2. I don't work with any painters who will do one coat on exterior, they won't even quote it that way. It's two coats or they don't want the job. Once you have everything set up and prepped, the painting is the easier part and the second coat always goes smoother, faster than the first -- so what the heck, just get that second coat on there while you're at it. It'll be done right and will protect your house and look great for years to come. I do know that Duration over pre-primed Hardie comes out looking reaaaallllly nice. Hardie & Duration is a nice pairing. Good luck with whatever you decide.

We arrived at Aura after mulling over Ellen Kennon paint chips and looking at websites of other full spectrum paints. We found good reviews of Aura on the painting forum (yay GW!), tracked down a store 55 miles away and bought some samples. We fell in love with the earthy palette and the richness of the colors. We settled on Masada to bring together our new maple kitchen cabinets, our brick chimney wall and some dark furniture & blinds in a large open plan space: At the same time, we were buying sample after sample of SW for various other projects, and were not happy with the color selection or even the SW sample paint quality. I tried color matching Aura "Kona" in Duration but they put in so much colorant that it was overly runny (don't ask!). We ended up with a drippy and flat/over-saturated mess on our laundry room wall. Repainted with Kona and, voila!, instant depth and richness--and works beautifully when viewed from kitchen. The eggshell paint even worked on our cabinets!

This is an older post but I wanred to add my experience with Promar 200. We have always used BM Regal Select eggshell in our home - when we repainted in connection with building an addition, they used Promar 200 eg-shel. It is horrible paint - and combined with spraying the walls (without backrolling), every tiny imperfection in the wall stands out like a sore thumb. It is so reflective. In one room they had to come back and fix some issues and they used BM Regal Select - it is night and day - the Promar is super shiny and almost makes the color look lighter, wheras the Regal is just soft and almost no reflection. The walls look terrible where Promar was used to the extent that they must be repainted.

What Sherwin Williams paint would you use and what sheen

I just had the bulk of my house painted in early November. My decorator suggested Satin as the sheen. It is the designation that SW uses for eggshell. My painter preferred Duration over Emerald. From what I could find online, there is little to no difference between Duration and Emerald except VOC. I kept the windows open from an hour or so before the painters arrived until 2 or 3 hours after they left. There was no paint odor at all. Thanks Izzy! I have been doing more research today and am finding many comments stating as you have above. People who've experienced both flat and satin prefer satin.

I also appreciate the tips on application. We purchased a sample and I did indeed notice it's thicker than I am used to. We are using a painter who will be spraying the wood siding and rolling the brick. I will be sure to point this out.
