Remodeling Design Dilemma Kitchens

help with kitchen wall, no uppers..??need a backsplash??

I've waited 20 years to redo our kitchen...and now we are going to actually do it. We have to be careful with the cost because even though we love our home, it will be considered a tear down in our neighborhood after we move out. The wall in question will abut a wall with white upper cabinets and a very good looking carrera marble look alike porcelain tile that goes from the soapstone counter to the bottom of the upper cabinets. The wall is question will abut the counter with the black glass cooktop and have a curved stainless steel hood vent on it. Do you think that we can just paint this wall? We do not want to use the tiles to cover this entire wall, the tile isn't THAT good. So...options seem to be only paint OR paint down to a small border of the same carrera tile OR do you have another idea? THANK YOU

here are the plans. photos aren't helpful now since demo hasn't taken place yet I deeply appreciate your interest

Can't give much advice without pictures but you NEED a backsplash behind a stove so just keep that in mind.

BTW, I'm trying to start the TTK club (Two-tone kitchen) to compete with the OTKers (One True Kitchen - all white cabs w/black counters and white subway), so welcome to the 'right' club! ;-) Majra's kitchen is a great example of using a backsplash with some color/variation in it, while still keeping it light. I don't know about matching exactly or not. I think it depends on your cab color and your space. Mine match almost exactly off the wall, but up, there is a ton of blue in them and some areas match and some totally don't - and it all depends on the light in the room at any given time. Your best bet is to get a few different samples and have them ready for when the counters go in. Then you can pick the right one. And don't let the contractor/tile people/whomever rush you. Find the one you love!

I was going to say open shelving would be nice, so I really like nosoccermom's pics. If you're going to do some sort of BS below the cabinets & don't want to take it up the wall, you can take it down the wall at the height of the bottom of the cabinets & put your shelves above, between the cab's. If you decide to put a cabinet there, make sure your face isn't directly in the cabinet!! You don't want to be uncomfortable while at the sink. Let us see what you end up doing.

Hi Chispa, House is a townhouse built in 1996, trying to modernize the look. As far as decorating style, I like modern/contemporary, nothing too funky. Something that would be cohesive with the rest of the kitchen, and bring the kitchen to life a little. It's very white right now.

I think doing a mix of different white tiles, or a mix of gloss and matte tiles might be easier to harmonize with the other two whites than having an expanse of a single white in the backsplash. These ideas are from Heath Ceramics. A mix of Heath's canvas white and vanilla bean. I don't know if I like this pattern for you, but I like the color mix. This is a dual-glazed tile; part of the tile is glossy and part is matte (I don't know if anyone but Heath does this, but you could mix gloss and matte tiles from someone else for a similar effect)

You could do painted glass under your hood, stainless sheet, tile just there, or paint with a very washable paint.
