What type of driveway do you have?
Comments (14)I love the crunch of deep gravel, but with kind of snow removal operations we have to have up here, it wouldn't work. We use a 63" wide snow blower, and 7 foot wide back blade, on a farm tractor The snow blower would suck up that gravel and shoot it out like shrapnel and the blade would lay mini gravel morraines in the lawn - until, of course, the lawn mower spit it all back at the cars and house windows during the mowing season. Which leaves blacktop or dirt. The cost of blacktop probably wouldn't be too bad (despite the length), but the cost of the preparing the base leaves me breathless since the lane goes down a steep hill, across a stream on a bridge, and through a protected marsh before it approaches the dooryard. So, we just celebrate the tail end of mud season with some bank run, well-contoured, raked and compacted and let it be. If we were more energetic we could probably draw it off of our own land as we have a lot of glacial till, but it's so much easier to call and order up a little conga line of trucks. A single afternoon of hubbub, with constant backup beeping, and general "men-folks messing around with big machines and piles of dirt" commotion and we're good to go for 2-3 years....See MoreDriveway drainage problem - Who do I call?

Comments (7)It looks to me like you could stand to have the driveway widened a little, creating better access to the front entrance and getting rid of the patio pavers in gravel. Whether it's a simple widening or a drive re-do, it your choice. The former would work as an interim solution. It would be good to reconfigure the walk to the stoop to make it more useful and attractive. It could be standalone or part of a drive widening project. The logical place to create seating for impromptu gatherings is under the overhang at the right of the stoop. Because of the overhang, it's not a good area for growing foundation plants. If you park or drive at left of driveway, it looks like you may need to extend the driveway with a permanent driveway material. That would solve the packed mud problem. In general, you need a landscape plan for the front yard that includes both hardscape and planting. The speed with which you implement it, and whether it was in pieces or in total, would be up to you. As far as giving you specific solutions, the pictures are too small, fuzzy, dark & partial....See MoreWhat to do about sinking driveway.
Comments (2)How old is your home! Seems most driveways sink near garage entrance during the first years following construction as the backfill settles. I replaced our entire driveway (asphalt) after roughly 20 years though the issue was present long before. Photos of the situation would help but perhaps underground to a pop-up in the lawn to divert rainwater from downspouts further from the house....See MoreElizabeth B
