Remodeling Design Dilemma Kitchens

Help With deciding kitchen cabinets? what to match?

Hi,

We are in the process of completely remodeling the kitchen. we're going for a modern kitchen. Below are pictures of our current kitchen.

Current Kitchen:

Plan: Replace the bottom row of cabinets with Belmont Carbon Drawers: analogous to the picture below( and this is same exact color/ cabinet/ style that we like). we are going to throwing a wine cooler in there somewhere to break up the monotony of nonstop brown cabinets.

The confusion is to what color to choose for the wall with the refrigerator and also for the top cabinets on the side of the cooking range:

One option is slightly off-white( slight beige) lacquer for the whole wall with the refrigerator on it.

For the top cabinets on the side of the cooking range we were planning on doing some combination of cabinets with pullout drawers and open shelving.

We are having a very hard time finalizing a counterpart color/style for the refrigerator wall and the top cabinets on the side of the cooking range. I was wondering if you can please give us some advice on cabinets/colors that can work well with what we have so far.

Can you post a lay out of kitchen and a pic of the whole kitchen, if possible. Are you only replacing cabinets? Not moving island? Not replacing floor? Can the island be one level?

I’d also post on home decorating forum.

Good afternoon Rimmi,

You have a really good space, and my advice for a modern kitchen would be take that wall on the island out and add a nice countertop to it. I will attache some photos so you can have a idea what I'm talking about. And the colors on the photos would look really nice with your new cabinets (depending if you plan to keep your floor the way it is)

You are lucky that your cabinets are not honey oak, that orange builder-grade color. Yours actually look like they have a nice dark stain. Painting, prep, etc is a lot of work. Your other finishes are nice too, dark pulls, pretty granite. Would you consider just doing a very pretty light backsplash? If you do go with paint, be sure to use BM cabinet coat. It will help cover the grain, though probably not all. There are many posts here on GW to help you with the process. With your brown granite you might look at BM Bone White. If you are looking for whites, lean toward the warmer whites. I love my two tone. I like stained wood but didn't want to feel surrounded by brown. I like things a bit mismatchy and seemed like a good fit in my older home. I did the tall cabinets white like the uppers so that everything at eye-level is the same color. Especially because the tall cabinets are right at the entrance to my kitchen (seemed like it would feel too "in-your-face" to have the wood there). I prefer two tone kitchens with the tall cabinets matched to the uppers rather than lowers, but I don't think it's terrible to match the lowers. You can find pics of kitchens done either way. Agree to do a little contrast with the wood floor so it doesn't all blend with the lower cabinets. My kitchen floor was stained to match the rest of the house (IMO it's more red than I'd like, trying to tone it down with the rug), so I did lighter cabinets. I think it would be too much for the floor and cabinets to blend together.

Absolute no to the taupe. Go with the lightest gray-white color in your cabinet and color match that. Check BM Edgecomb Gray, but hard to tell with pic, or Classic gray. This will cool down and balance the warmth in the countertop. If you want to try brighter (off-white) look at BM Steam. But try to match that lightest color in your stone. I would do a similar color backsplash, elongated subway/something simple, with same color grout (or lighter grout). Absolutely change handle locations on cabinets, putty the holes where handles currently are in the middle of doors. Put knobs on cabinets in the corners, handles on drawers (as Filipe mentioned/showed). Current location makes them look extremely dated, plus poor function.

Wow thank you both so much for your insights! I did not know maple Is so hard to stain! Does painting maple still have the same outcome as staining it? I chose maple because my contractor said that would be a more durable choice :/ my vinyl is shaw floorte vinyl and it snaps together. if I chose to do vinyl on the stairs my my guess is I could glue it to the maple stairs? sorry for all of the questions but know that your help is very appreciated! I am new to this! Thank you

Thanks for the help. I have attached a hand-drawn picture giving the schematics of the kitchen.

we are planning on making the island single level. with the remodel the island will also be made approximately 1 to 2 feet wider. The countertops will most likely be changed to some form of White stone.

The soffits will be removed ( actually already have been removed).

the kitchen floor is going to be a 16 x 32

No problem.

With that floor, i would suggest the Calacatta Rio quartz. Its a white stone with some veins on the same ton of your floor.

You have a lot of space to work with, which is great. Is your house modern? Are you looking to do flat panel or shaker style cabinets? Do you wanted a color, white, walnut, etc.? I love dark blue with marble and/or walnut. Anyway, I’d definitely post on the kitchen forum and home decorating forum. You will get a lot of replies and help!
