Needing some quick information about black spots

Hello, this is my first post ever so, if there's anything wrong just let me know.

Im new to rose care and i've four miniature roses, three pink and one white, the latter had a yellow leave since i bought it, the pink ones never had a problem with black spots before i bought the white one so i'm sure it spreaded the disease. I only recently learned the black dots were a fungi and my roses are all skeletals. . My question is: do black spots come back every year even if i get rid of it? I mean, remove the affected parts, use a fungincide like sulfur or sodium bicarbonate and all? Will they come back?

Hi Lucas,

Some roses are more susceptible to black spot than others. There are anti-fungal sprays that someone else will surely be able to suggest -- I don't spray my roses, because I do not mind a little bit of black spot, and I dislike working with toxic chemicals.

In addition to spraying, you can examine whether or not you are giving the roses their preferred growing environment, which would affect the health of their immune systems. Do they get plenty of sun? Do you water them regularly, so that the soil stays cool and damp to the touch (not dry enough that water pools on top of the soil when you water it the next time)? Or do they have too much water, so that the soil is always wet, and waterlogged? Often people try to keep miniature roses indoors, which can be hard on them, as they do not get enough light.

Hopefully someone who knows more about miniature roses will chime in here. My guess is that the grower you got them from used anti-fungal sprays, so that they would look great in the store. Those sprays probably wore off, which is why you are seeing black spot now.

Minis are extremely susceptible to black spot, probably more so than any other class of roses.

There are organic sprays and non-organic sprays. I find the non-organics far more effective in CONTROLLING black spot. I use the Bayer fungicide in the blue bottle which gives me excellent CONTROL. Serenade, an organic control made by Bayer is a possible option for you.

I capitalized CONTROL because you never cure black spot, you control it. Growing roses in a hot and humid climate is where black spot thrives.

The pickings are slim right now. Better luck to me next year! Linda, you are on the mark. Perennial? Annual? It's all relative to your zone. As some say at noon, it's happy hour somewhere! I did plant one of the lavenders I propagated from the plants my old beds. But, hey, some lavenders are annual in my zone, and they are almost certainly annuals in zone 4. How was I to know?

I have used black plastic for the past several years and love it. You can either do as denninmi stated, or what i do is after a rain storm I walk around with a pointy stick and see where the water pools up and just poke holes in the pastic, has worked just fine. In my garden, the black plastic actually allows me to water less than I would otherwise due to the fact that it holds the moisture in. As far as slugs - I still have some slug issues, but not a ton. It does cook some both on top and under, but at night when it's cool, they still make it across to the veges once in awhile. As far as other products that are breathable, I have tried some and i don't like them for a few reasons. The main one being is they don't work very well as a weed barrier (weeds will still grow up and through them. In addition, while they do warm the soil some, they don't quite as much as the black plastic (using the wife's meat thermometer - shhh don't tell her!- it was a difference of almost 10 degrees in the spring time). Attaching a trellis to vinyl siding? (need some quick advice)

I'm not thrilled about the idea of attaching anything to the siding either. Part of the problem is that the trellis doesn't seem to be able to lean back. I think there is a cane the grew behind the trellis that keeps it leaning forward a bit and then the weight of the rest of the rose is pushing it too far right now. I'd cut off that cane but I can't actually see which one it is. I do have two other trellises on either side, but moving some of the rose to those doesn't seem like it would solve the problem. I thought about doing cement on the feet, but I'm having trouble pushing the trellis into the right spot and I'm not sure that I'd be able to hold it long enough for the cement to set. That's why I don't have it propped up either - the bottom is fairly sturdy but it's the top that leans and won't go back. My temporary measure is actually an extension cord tied to the top of the trellis and anchored rather poorly on the phone box and a door handle.

Hey Lucas,

I'm in the spray camp, so here's the chemical suggestion...

You need a contact and a systemic fungicide. For a large garden I would suggest four to five systemics and a contact, but this isn't the case with you. For you I would suggest the Bayer three in one or the Ortho products. Both can be found in your local big box store easily enough and they are okay as far as being effective. You may also look into improving your growing conditions and also check to see that you don't have spider mites. Miniatures are famous for suffering from them.

Adrian has a great suggestion there; spider mites can thrive in minis. They can be kept in check with cold water spraying during spells of hot, dry weather. No need to worry about using a 2nd product for them.

My favorite "mini" is a monster called Sweet Chariot. It is short but here it can spread to four feet across!
