Another of the greats, as much as we need the sun we also try to hide from him. Regulating the sun is no easy task.

I agree with everything Buehl said ^^. I only showed the fridge there because you said you couldn't move the windows. I also agree with Beuhl that the fridge would be best in the upper right hand side so it's closest to where it will be most used. Otherwise with your table attached to the island, people will be running an obstacle course to get stuff out of the fridge OR they'll be walking through your work zone. You don't have enough room for the dish pantry in the lower right hand corner unless you want to make it a lot narrower and not as deep. It was the first thing I tried. The problem is it will impact your seating even more because of its current dimensions. Plus you're still walking across the whole kitchen to get the soda's out of the fridge during dinner. I still think the best layout is with the clean up sink where the fridge was and the fridge where it is in this new idea, and a prep sink on the island. However I'm trying one more time. I kept the sink on the island but moved the island closer to the counters on the left. I believe you said the windows are 4' so that's the room I left between the island and the left side. I added a wall oven so you're not having to bend down. Trust me, it gets harder each year. LOL. Honestly, if it was my kitchen I'd do the prep sink on the island and the cleanup sink on the left side (and I'm one who prefers my clean up sink on the island and my prep sink on the perimeter!)

the "bad suggestion" comment stands, because that is what it is, I do not post to hurt anyone's feelings or to be rude. I may not be the most politically correct poster, however my comments are originated from having personally seen the results of your suggestion. I have grown a couple of hundreds of catasetums, cycnoches, and mormodia and have made this particular mistake several times,, Each time the results were very similar... the rot continued and the bulb died. Placing a bulb with a rotted end on top of moist moss is not something that should be recommended for obvious reasons. That is why I suggested a layer of perlite tween moss and rotted base of bulb, to give the rotted end a chance to dry up and heal while the tiny roots extend down to moss..... a layer of charcoal would work as well, the key point is to reduce moisture at base of the bulb so it can heal. I am in Florida and did my orchid growing in Broward county. With regard to dormancy... these plants will teach you to be patient... I had bought some bulbs at redlands festival from south South America vendor and had to wait over a year for plant's growth cycle to kick in, likely due to opposing seasons. Eventually plant adjusted and bloomed normally.

I'm changing the subject a bit, but if you're interested in books that really "put you into the mind of someone else" and are interested in autism, try The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time. It's told through the eyes of a teenaged boy who is autistic, and it was quite interesting. He made "rules" for himself, and although they were somewhat logical, they were not sensible at all. He couldn't see things that were blatantly clear to the reader, yet he was a brilliant mathematician. A secondary plotline shows the reader the frustration of a loving father who was trying very hard to do what was best for his son -- with difficulties from multiple directions. Not a true story, but an excellent read.
