Help me add some curb appeal to my cute little home!
Comments (22)Following up on Addie's idea, if you want to designate an area for the pool and incorporate it into your landscape, why not? Then in spring and fall it could be your campfire area, and in winter you could put holiday decorations there. But my first item on the priority list would be a privacy fence. Frankly your house looks fine/wonderful to me but if you have no back yard and are wanting to get the most use out of your front yard with kids, etc. then start with a GOOD fence. It is not inexpensive. Then just prune a bit or refresh what you have. And for what it's worth, I think the tree looks like it is hugging your house, in a good way! Plus if I was a kid I would be up that tree in a New York minute. :) You don't need to do it all at once! And you can get a lot of plants and other things bit by bit as they come on sale or even for free from friends or neighbors who are cleaning up. Do the big important thing (fence) with a lot of planning and don't skimp on the money and the rest will come from your enjoyment of your private space as time and cash allows....See Morehow can I improve exterior curb appeal?
Comments (2)Generally speaking, there are too many focal point on the house right now so I think you need to tone some things down. Here's some ideas: I love metal stars but I think there is a better place to put it. Take it down and paint the accent boards above the garage (that "box" above the garage door) the same color as the body of the house. Change the garage doors to something less busy. A nice wood look door might be the trick. I prefer the one without windows but both are nice. I love your brick! Please don't paint it. I had similar brick on a house once and greens went really well with it. I don't have the skills to render different colors on your house, but hopefully someone who can will jump in...See MoreHow can I add curb appeal to the exterior of this house?
Comments (6)I wouldn't say it is without any curb appeal. It is attractive with a kind of rustic vibe. I would not ditch the shutters. They are completely appropriate to this house. If you removed them, you would be left with even larger expanses of blank wall, out of balance with the window sizes. Although the shutters on the two short upper story windows could be a bit wider, some will repeat the dogma that they should be sized to look able to actually cover the windows when closed and should be removed if they don't. That is clearly impossible here and would also give an unbalanced feel. IMO of course. I might give the front and storm door a color that works with the siding and roof (pumpkin, maybe, or a warm strong blue or green). I can't really see the porch/front door light, but the ones by the garage door are rather undersized. So the front door one might be also. What is really needed is better landscaping. The rows of small/narrow shrubs don't add much appeal, and still won't once they've grown. I would consult with a garden center (if they have a designer on staff, many do) to come up with a more varied and naturalistic planting scheme....See MoreHow can I improve curb appeal on my funky ‘60s ranch?
Comments (28)I like your house. The landscaping is something you can do yourself if you are willing. It does not have to be complicated. It needs a deeper planting bed and I suggest another tree. The shade provided by the current tree is good. I can't tell if it had grass or groundcover beneath it. There are some plants that work in dry shade. Here is where I suggest another tree. Crape Myrtle would be good there. Some get large so be sure of the cultivar if you like this idea. When you can I suggest extending the steps at least on the left side and all the way across if you can afford it. If you don't love the iron supports remove them. Perhaps you can use them indoors if you like MCM. Otherwise find a home for them. They will be wanted. As Simplynatural shows above there are plenty of plants that can live and be attractive in your setting. What is show is just a suggestion of where plants could go. You need at least two shrubs. Regarding shutters, it may be true they are not part of MCM design and yet many of the houses in my neighborhood had them where I grew up and they were custom homes. If you heart is set on shutters then have them. I reconsidered the path to the street when I noticed you have no sidewalk. I think the money is better spent on enhancing the entrance landing or apron, not sure what it is called. I have no skill at images but I hope the descriptions helped. I almost forgot, do you have a porch light or over garage light?...See MoreDavidR
