Please help me select dining nook furniture!

Our house does not have a formal dining room-- this is it: a dining nook adjacent to our kitchen, and it is under a staircase that leads to an upstairs loft. We purchased the current table we have 10 or so years ago and while it "fits" in the space, it is a tight fit. We got this set because it had a bench and could accommodate others at the table for holiday dinners, etc. when we host them.

We have recently redone all of the trim and doors in the house to white. Naturally, by doing so, we also have determined that our current dining set is too big and bulky and makes the space look tight and the space feels cluttered. We have an IKEA Leksvik china buffet against the wall in the space to the left where the door is.

The current table is 40" wide and 72" long. We are debating on whether or not to downsize to 60" long or 48" long. We are a small family of 3, we do host an occasional family or friend meal, but not more than once every few months.

Also, we are trying to determine if we should go with a light color, like white, with a dark top since our kitchen cabinets are a white shade and our trim is all now white. I'm hoping to potentially purchase a sideboard also to go with the new table. Please share any suggestions you may have!!!
