Prefab Fireplace Removed: Possible Load Bearing Wall

So we decided to get rid of our fireplace and have an entertainment center built. We hired the guy who built our beautiful kitchen cabinets. For the kitchen we communicated through a contractor, but this time we hired the cabinet guy outright.

Anyway...communication has been a bit iffy. Today he demolished the fireplace (after first checking where water and gas pipes were). He did accidentally cut into the gas line, while forgetting to first turn off the gas.

We are now not completely confident in his care and concern for safety and are wondering if the wall he removed around the fireplace was load bearing. He says it is not. The side of the fireplace was next to an exterior wall and the other side of the fireplace was a large floor to almost ceiling open notch for a tv area. How can we tell if it was a load bearing wall?

Below is a pic over the area after and before demo. An entertainment unit will be built into the empty notch and fireplace area.
