Comments (23)Well, of the ones on your list, the only really good pics I have this season are these two. My HEAVEN ON EARTH is new for me this yr, and altho it appears it's going to be a nice healthy grower, I'm not too happy with the hanging blooms. They arch and hang down like a lot of the DA's. And so far I'm not that impressed with the blooms. My SECRET gets thrips all the time, so rarely looks good (I try not to spray). GENTLE GIANT is ok, but doesn't bloom much. Love the color of its blooms tho. PETER MAYLE, NIGHT OWL and SHEILA'S PERFUME haven't done a lot in the few yrs I've had them. Altho, my SP is an own-root and got off to a very slow start early on. GRAHAM THOMAS is ok, but I'm enjoying GOLDEN CELEBRATION much more! One thing to consider is, everybody's experiences with all these roses will be different. Regions, climate, elevation, cultural practices will all be different and yield different results. I don't fertilize as much as I should. Some spots in my yard are less fertile than others. I also don't spray for fungus or bugs. Yet. So keep in mind all these factors will affect how your roses or someone else's perform. DOLLY PARTON - has big fat glowing blooms, but she doesn't repeat as well as I'd like. SPELLBOUND - has really impressed me in this its second season. I really like this one!...See MoreLast chance to enable me to add 1 rose to my Pickering order!
Comments (23)Brandy, you are joking, aren't you? Me as an enabler? I am embarrassed. I doubt that this term would ever fit me. I just try to be helpful:-) In addition, next year you will hate me if some of the roses will not be free of blackspot. It will be all my fault! However; Sunset Celebration is a great rose. Almost every rose balled in that Âapricot bed after the rain we finally got but not Sunset Celebration. I just cut a few stems and brought inside. Good bloomer Well-being is very nice but it does not do too well for me here close to the coast; I doubt that it would do well without spraying. In addition I find it a bit stingy bloomer. As I mentioned, we didnÂt spray since end of April* this year and Well-being does not have many leaves left. Defoliation could be partially caused by spider mite infestation but in front of Well being there is Belle Ãpoque and that rose is gorgeous! Healthy leaves and stunning two-tone flowers that are fragrant. *(DH just sprayed today and I followed up with calcium treatment to fight botrytis)...See MoreCan somebody talk to me about roses...
Comments (28)Step away from the tea's. LOL! If you want to save your sanity, you will. I'm in the same zone as you. Same state, although I am coastal, right next to Boston and you are in the western part of the state, right? Anyway, about 10 years ago I went crazy for roses.. picked them solely on looks. This can get very expensive. There are many, many beautiful roses and the teas are especially beautiful. I googled images of Heirloom, I can see why you want it. That said... I planted 9 roses in my side garden and 5 in the other side garden, both sides are in the front of my house. My house has a weird setup. With the exception of 2, all of them were a PIA, some were bigger PIA's than others. All of them bit the dust. Ooh, sorry..it was 3 not 2. Sort of. One of the survivors reverted back to Dr. Huey....it is amazing, huge. Only blooms once a year but it looks spectacular right now sharing a Rose of Sharon tree with 2 blooming clematis's. I don't remember what rose it was when I bought it. Blackspot, fungus, bugs, etc. I had a gorgeous rose in the front side garden with 5. It is a lovely, pale pink with a slightly silver tinge. Very slight.. not that icky silver. This rose was in the middle of 2 others that were covered with blackspot, constant spraying, etc. Not only did this rose not suffer from anything, it grew to 3 to 4 times it's original size and it bloomed just about non stop. And talk about pretty! Oh my! Every stage of bloom was fabulous and the blooms lasted, too. This rose is called Our Lady of Guadalupe. After the first year I planted nothing but her in the front side garden. And I never did anything special, at all, to help them. I am what you'd call a "good enough" gardner. I have a bad back and terribly rocky soil. Carefully thought out garden beds did not happen here. I would try and dig a hole and run into concrete sometimes. Lots of my plants/flowers went where it was easiest. I don't do anything to my roses, not in season, nor in the winter. They've been through Nor Easters and frigid temps. It wasn't until this past winter that I lost all of my LOG's. We had gas problems and the gas company dug up the whole front side garden. I was amazed that anything came back. But I need to go out and get at least 3 OLG'S. The other rose is a lovely striped rose. I have 2 of them. Very pretty. No complaints except for the thorns. It has to be the thorniest rose ever! Oh, and forgot to mention that in addition to all of Our Lady's charms, she is almost thorn less, to boot! Anyway, the striped rose is George Burns. Both GB and OLG are floribundas. If you love the height of the teas, try a couple of grandiflora's. Roses are wonderful... but they can be a madness, too. Anyway, here are a few pics. a href="http://s49.photobucket.com/albums/f267/EileenMc/Garden/?action=view&current=OurLadyinBud.jpg" target="_blank"> Oops! I don't know why the pics are so big, sorry. Don't know how I got doubles, either. But I typed this yesterday and it went poof! Ain't gonna happen again ;) Whatever you choose, good luck! Silly...See MoreTalk to me about blackspot resistant yellows...
Comments (12)Hmm, some interesting suggestions! Thank you all. I have Perle D'Or elsewhere and it's a great rose. Ditto Lady H. I also have Sunsprite but it's too small for that spot for me. Buff Beauty holds down the far end of the border, close to the house with less sun, and it's beautiful although the repeat isn't as good as it would be with more sun. I'm dubious about Austins having slowly weeded them out for not performing but the ones you mention are newer ones aren't they - so maybe they would do better? In cultural notes - that's daff and tulip foliage round the base, and if it was just the base that was spotty I'd just grow something taller in front. However it's the whole plant. If they can't cope with the hurly-burly of a mixed border then they aren't a rose for me, space being too limited for more classic rose beds. Summertime and Goldfassade are both new roses to me, so something to research. I have Isabella Sprunt and Etoile at the front of the border at the moment as I don't know how big they are going to get. Probably, like everything else, way too big for their spots. I have that problem in my slightly older pink beds, which I planted assuming that Beales would know what they were about concerning UK rose sizes. I knew they grew bigger elsewhere... Also apparently here too if happy! Re the early yellows - I have R. Primula in a pot elsewhere, not sure it's habit is great for a cramped border? I also have Maigold, which I got as a small cutting late last year - hmf was not incredibly helpful as to it's habit and I don't know if it would work as a shrubby short climber fanned out at the back? I had xanthina but it very suddenly died this spring, don't know why - leaded out as usual and then rapidly died back over a week - looked like it had dried out but that was not the case....See Morelyannastarknola
