Windows Remodeling Design Dilemma

replace or keep old windows?

We are adding an addition to our home and the old windows are 4x4, they’re not what I would choose. Do they look ok to keep or is it worth the money to update them? They are new so they are in good condition. The grids are also built into the windows so all the new windows are having to have the same. I would rather do without grids but I’m so torn on what to do. Here is a photo of what the house will look like. The arrows are pointing to the old windows.

What brand are the windows? What material are they made of? Pictures? What brand are your new windows going to be?

The windows you are pointing to are 6 over 6 and the panes are horizontal. That's bad and I'm not sure why you have mullions on a home that from your drawing appears to be a raised ranch.

This is the only time you get to update your windows and capitalize on a volume purchase. Look at what other architects are doing on new homes. Make the update NOW

You can contact mfgr's that offer historic wood windows with the divided lites that you have. One that does a good job for me is TrimLine. A wood craftsman can convert those old sashes into thermally efficient ones. It will be costly though. Home Depot can't help you! Michael Here is a link that might be useful: historic windows

You will need to check with your local/state environmental oversight body to see how the asbestos caulking is defined. Technically, the steel window with the lead paint can be removed by contractor if he is an EPA certified renovator. You might be best suited to have an abatement company remove everything and prepare the opening for your contractor to install the new windows.

I believe that the original sliding design was done with keeping the air movement to a minimum. Actually that's an important consideration. A bifold arrangement is going to leak air all around and down the middle. Just sayin'. Casey

Thank you. There may be a better forum for this but I couldn't find it. It's not worth replacing the glass although that is interesting to know. I am afraid any film that would block enough sun would bock too much light. My husband is dead set against most of them. The window is 30+ years old. No, changing the glass doesn't make economic sense at this point. I have jury-rigged valances on rods at the top on the inside on each section and wondered how blinds would work or if f blinds would work. I can't figure out how the bay window blinds even work :) Home dec impaired apparently. Thanks for your help. Diana in PA

BeverlyFLADeziner, in the photo on the bottom, are the sashes painted wood or are they a powder coated metal (ie--same material as exterior). I'm not sure what to search for to find more of this look, or what to ask for at a window store. Can an old wood sash window be replaced by this type of updated window, or is the window casement thinner, and possibly would not fit into the original opening?

I certainly would not choose grids for the new windows if you don’t like them that makes no sense.It is only 2 windows to replace do it now and BTW lose the shutters at the same time. IMO the windows by the chimney look off because they are not centered on that exterior wall so make sure they look right on the inside.
