Replacing Old Windows w/Wood Windows

Hurricane Katrina managed to smash in about half of the windows in my two homes on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. One of the houses is over 100 years old, the other is about 50. Both houses had old white-painted wooden windows; the upper dormer windows on the old Victorian house were sort of elaborate and multi-paned.

Since only about half of the windows are going to be replaced, then I don't want to replace those with new vinyl or whatever windows, right?

Someone suggested that I take the old broken windows as a template to somebody who makes wooden windows, and have him make matching windows in wood. Does anyone know the cost of this? Is it more or less than buying windows at Home Depot or something? Can somebody take the old frames, and install double glass in them for better insulation? Any suggestions on costs, or aesthetics, greatly appreciated!
