Ceth....lots of insects skip the pupal stage....it's called incomplete metamorphosis. It's quite simple ; these insects simply change a little bit everytime they shed their exoskeleton. It's only at the final instar that their wings and sex organs are fully formed. Examples of insects that undergo incomplete metamorphosis include grasshoppers, crickets, katydids, earwigs, cockroaches, the true bugs (stink bugs and all of their kin), and many more. Sunny, seeing ONE grasshopper is cause for celebration! I'd just leave it alone and let it become food for a bird, toad, snake, squirrel, mantis, or dragonfly.

Thanks for the response. In the past when I unwrapped a graft on topworked pear trees and rejoiced that "It Worked!!" when I saw the brand new, greenish, healthy tissue that had grown over a period of weeks to fill in around the graft wounds......I thought that, OK, the graft worked, the wound is healed up, and I can now just toss the tape and see if it continues to grow more mature over time. In less than 2 weeks the brand new, greenish, healthy tissue became discolored, dried, and died. As did the scion. Sad and mad. That was the L A S T time that I left unwrapped new tissue exposed to the elements. A super grafter here has said that new tissue on graft wounds develops better/well when in the darkness under wraps. The stretchable wrapping used here expands during the whole growing season as the graft grows in size. I usually do not pull off the wrapping until many months later, and the tissue always looks to be much more mature and ready to face the cruel world. No more discoloring, drying, and dying since. The exception to this is when the tissue is growing fast and bulges outward in between the spiraled wrapping of 1/4" wide rubber band. In that situation, I clip off the too-tight band and loosely wrap some white, plastic, unglued, flagging tape over immature tissue to shade it for additional maturing time while shielded from Sun blasting.....Because locusts from 1" to 4" in length can fly up to branch tips with tender scion leaves just emerging, I make loose, fluffy, thin "tents" from cut & taped grocery bags to cover the scions with and unwelcome them. As the leaves grow in size, the tents are tossed. At least the leaves get a running start before the raiders will spot them.

Are you certain it's grasshoppers? Have you seen them or just the leaf damage? We have bad grasshoppers too but they've never found their way inside the GH, thank goodness. They are still a long ways from emerging around here, so I haven't seen any yet. If you're certain it's grasshoppers I would try semaspore bait from Planet Natural.

Susan, I spread the Nolo Bait when I am seeing hoppers that are between 1/4" and 1/2" in length because it is most effective on them when they are that size. Usually, for us here in southern OK, hoppers are in that size range sometime in the last two weeks of April or in May. When you buy any product containing Nosema locustae, always check the package for a 'packed on' or 'use by' date and make sure it is not out-of-date. It only retains viability for a few months. Once you open a package, if you don't use it all, store in in a refrigerator and keep it viable for a few more weeks that way. I often see Nolo Bait type products on store shelves that are far past the 'use by' date and (of course) don't buy them if that's the case. I only use Nolo Bait once every 3 or 4 or even 5 years because once you establish the disease on your property, it continues killing for some time. That's one of the most useful aspects of it....since grasshoppers will cannibalize other grasshoppers, the disease will spread from infected dying/dead ones to the ones that eat them. Jo3ponies, There are several grasshopper control products that use the Nosema locustae as their active ingredient, including Nolo Bait, Grasshopper Attack and Semaspore. I've linked one below so you can see what it looks like. You may find it in nurseries or farm supply stores in your area or, depending on where you live, you may have to order it online and have it shipped to you.
