Cape Stair re-design
Comments (3)2009 IRC The maximum riser is 7 3/4" and the minimum tread is 10". Winder treads shall have a minimum tread depth of 10 inches measured between the vertical planes of the foremost projection of adjacent treads at the intersections with the walkline. Winder treads shall have a minimum tread depth of 6 inches at any point within the clear width of the stair. Within any flight of stairs, the largest winder tread depth at the walkline shall not exceed the smallest winder tread by more than 3/8 inch. Walkline The walkline across winder treads shall be concentric to the curved direction of travel through the turn and located 12 inches from the side where the winders are narrower. The 12-inch dimension shall be measured from the widest point of the clear stair width at the walking surface of the winder. If winders are adjacent within the flight, the point of the widest clear stair width of the adjacent winders shall be used....See MoreStaircase Redesign Help and Ideas
Comments (13)Thank you, everyone! I'm sorry I haven't checked in sooner. It's been crazy. Boopadaboo, your black and white staircase is beautiful! Very dramatic! Palimpsest, that makes sense about the edge indicating no solid treads. I didn't even notice that. You say if we paint, we MAY be able to patch the lower treads. What would determine that? Then, for the higher treads where it is all carpet now, would we just paint the plywood or whatever is under the carpet, or would we need to put something else (hardwood?) on top of that subflooring? Another question - the carpet currently extends all the way up the stairs onto the second floor landing/hallway and into all the bedrooms. All the carpet will be removed, but I do like carpet in bedrooms so we would put new carpet in them. If we decided not to do new carpet on the stairs themselves, where should the painted wood stop? Does that make sense? Would we do hardwood on the stairs, then new carpet starting at the landing at the top and extending into the bedrooms? The landing/hallways are very small and just functional...nothing grand at all. I hope I'm being clear enough. Thanks again for all the ideas, suggestions, pictures and expert eyes!...See MoreI need help redesigning my living room
Comments (35)I am glad you liked it! :) Sorry for the late response, I've tried to think about alternative solution with more passage space. It's not so standard as previous two layouts, but it does give more space and maybe it give you an inspiration with your living room: I've choose the red stools to balance the red chair and to define and highlight central conversation area, but at the same time to keep view at fireplace unblocked (when they are not in use). I had to change color of one chair, since having the chair in the corner in the same red color kept kicking the space out of balance. I don't know if you like that trend of layered rugs, in the case you do, I think it could help in your case to break a bit long, rectangular shape of the room. On the short wall I though buffet with a mirror or art could provide a focal point for seatings placed by fireplace. In this setup I've put two rounded coffee tables instead long rectangular one to avoid highlighting the length of the room. @Kim, thank you :)...See MoreStair Runner on Wood Stairs - Need Help
Comments (2)Any good carpet installer would be able to do it. Should be no more than $500.00. For reference, we typically pay around $250.00 for the stairs when they are installing the remaining portion of the house....See MoreMaria Carnesale-Gottlob
