What color grout should I use with black and white windmill tile?

We are remodeling a 1930's beach house and want to use black and white windmill tile in a small bathroom. What color grout should I use? I would love a photo example.

Hi, here is my original 1928 mud set floor tile. The tiles were set in 6” of mud! The caulk line at the tub is maipei charcoal and you can see that it is a little bit dark by comparison

I think ‘natural gray’ would be a better match. There are small rocks and sand in the original mud, not sure how to replicate that!

A medium grey would be the most period. That's what I'm planning to use (haven't picked the exact shade yet). I don't care for the look of pinwheel with bright white grout because the pattern is totally lost.

A grey, not sure of the tone but i think like skitt said grey would be best. White might be too much and black will kinda look dirty? If that makes sense.

Well, vintage was the original idea because this is a remodel of our family farm's kitchen that my in-laws for several generations have lived in. Now we have lived here for 20 years and it was time to replace the 65 year old cupboards. We have college kids and they hated to see the old stuff go so I tried to keep the spirit of the place. The counters are soapstone, the knobs are the black iron that Amerock makes. The exposed hinges match. The wood is cherry. Thanks for both of your comments. Score 1 to 1. From what I understand from our contractor the tile dictates the grout size. I should add that because your tiles are larger and they are going on the floor, you may want to consider a 1/8" grout line. If we were talking about a uniform subway tile back splash - 1/16" grout line works (and I think are more preferable on vertical surfaces). 1/16" seems lean for that tile size. If your tile has variation even by a minute amount you will want a larger grout line. I am sure others will say 1/16" is doable, but it makes me nervous because you are depending so much on the skill level of your installer. I have 12 x 24 in my home and I did 3/16" and am very happy with them and feel like it looks very appropriate with the size of the tile.

So, I have an older 2016 TCNA handbook. When I was remodeling several years ago and considering glass tile, I read about it in the handbook. There are some challenges that are unique with glass tile. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t choose it. It just means you should verify that the tile pro knows how to install it. Ask the tile pro what he does differently when working with glass tile. If he says “nothing,” then he’s not the right pro. He should be able to address how he handles these topics depending on your exact material: - waterproofing method - mesh tape, how to make it not show - thinset color, consistence and coverage - avoiding excess thinset, shrinkage and ghosting It’s been a while, so I don’t know all the details, I just remember reading a bit about it in the handbook, which I was reading so I’d know what questions to ask. You should also have the manufacturer’s instructions on hand. I love that tile. Good luck!

With my black tile I did Mapei in Charcoal. You could still see the pattern. or, what if you did a very neutral gray? these are all black tiles w/a gray grout light gray what's there now would look like a white grout. do you like the distinct contrast? white black Mapei grout, try Gray or Silver. Thinking about a charcoal gray or black. Does anyone have a photo of that.

I used black on a black/white hex tile pattern and it looks appropriate and brings out the design. I've gotten many complements on it.

I agree with the rest. If it were a checkerboard, that would be a different story. Black grout would be the thing-- either way-- black or white would look exactly the same, believe it or not. Black would be easier to keep up. but being that you have white tiles against white tiles, the black would be TOO much of a contrast. Go with a medium grey, something like Custom Delorean grey, or Mapei Pewter.
