Need help arranging living room
We are in the process of redecorating our formal living now that the kids toys have been moved to the basement:) Ideally, we would like this space to be inviting and comfortable to entertain and also play family games, read a book etc. We like neutrals, simple, clean lines, less traditional, easy to clean fabrics. Seems like transitional might be our style. This room has two windows and an opening to the front door area as well as the dining room. There is also a partial wall next to the staircase which is a little awkward for seating. Right now we have a hutch on that wall to store games, books etc. We can switch out the hitch for something else but still need the storage space. We brought our sectional from another room to see how things would fit and that's what you see in these pics. I can't visualize how to arrange furniture and not block all the windows and opening to dining room and not sure if couch/loveseat combo is the right choice. Any opinions would be much appreciated!

It's jus not a good look w/the type room/decor you have. try it elsewhere. try craigslist and similar sources for rugs, tables, shelving. as for the room layout, for the wall that's next to the doorway, and to the right of window (pic #3 up top) what if you did some cool shelving or book cases? I'd also look into doing some sort of shade or blind instead of those bulky drapes. This is a simple layout you could copy. a larger sofa w/a chaise would work for that room better than your two sofas. if doing a tv, try a shallow console and mount the tv to the wall. you can do a 'coffee table' by utilizing an ottoman or something similar. this type of sofa against the large windows would work out better. notice the blinds, nice contrasting paint color on the walls, colorful rug, potted plants. same layout. So I have no issue with no TV I would however face the furniture toward the window since that is really the focal point in the space Float the sofa facing the window leaving the walkway behind it on the east wall have a nice long console table with some decor or a large piece of art above .Put the choirs on either side of the sofa facing each other and a nice large square coffee table. Lighting is of course a real need and once you have the furniture in you can figure where and what you need. I never like sectionals for actual conversation so not to that . 6 years agolast modified: 6 years agoFew arrangements are more social, inviting, and cozier than two sofas parallel to one another with a long or oval table in the middle. Move around the two sofas you have in their now to try this configuration oriented going north south, then east west and see what might fit the best. The sofas you have now really lean back a lot so remember that with a sofa that has a lower back, less sloping back, it would fit with less of a squeeze.

6 years agoWell, maybe we should start with a family game table. Ideally, where would you want to put that? I think the hutch could move to the thermostat wall and the game table could float out in front of it. You might put some frosted or patterned film over the glass in the hutch so you don't have to keep it tidy for guests. Use a smaller scale sofa and two chairs in the remaining space. Drapes would soften things a bit, and you could use shades under them if you need privacy.

6 years agoHere a couple of other arrangements you might consider as you move forward. They both feature low concealed storage on either side of the single window wall. They can be topped with family photos, lighting, art or any number of things. Between them, a window seat is nestled.
Option 1 has an intimate seating area for reading or semi-private conversations. Adjacent to it is a display wall shelf. Option 2 has a console on the dining room wall with a couple of ottomans beneath it, that could come in for guest overflow.
I tend to agree with Decoenthusiaste that the dining wall may be a natural place for the eye to fall upon entering the room. So, keeping that in mind would be good.
You have a good idea of how you want to use the room, so you'll have to determine how much seating you need. The options below would seat 6-7 comfortably and up to 9-10 in a party type scenario.
