Furniture Design Dilemma living room

Need help arranging the living room

Hi,

This is my parents' living room (ignore the furniture, it's a stock image.). The room's sole purpose is entertaining guests, so there won't be a TV here. There is no fireplace either. They have a small couch and two chairs with a rectangular coffee table which they don't want to discard. They want to keep it simple (Scandinavian, probably), but don't want it to be too minimal

My questions:

1. Can you put a sectional, a couch and two chairs in one seating arrangement? Or should they just get one regular couch?

2. Since there is no TV, how should they orient the furniture? What to put on the fourth side if they just get one couch

3. What to do with the walls? Especially the east wall, since the seating arrangement would probably be skewed towards the west because of the entryways.

4. Any other piece of furniture you think would add nicely (Don't suggest side tables, those will obviously be there)

5. Any other suggestions and/or decoration ideas you might have are welcome :D

Good morning,

1. I don't believe the room is large enough to support a sectional, couch, and two chairs.

2. I would choose the large window as the focal point.

3. You are absolutely right in wanting to maintain a walk-space into the dining area. How about 'floating' either a couch or 2 chairs roughly 4 feet away from the east wall.

4. East wall would be a great place for book cases/shelving to display favorite objects.

I hate TV in my LR and have never had one for the last 40yrs. So I have no issue with no TV I would however face the furniture toward the window since that is really the focal point in the space Float the sofa facing the window leaving the walkway behind it on the east wall have a nice long console table with some decor or a large piece of art above .Put the choirs on either side of the sofa facing each other and a nice large square coffee table. Lighting is of course a real need and once you have the furniture in you can figure where and what you need. I never like sectionals for actual conversation so not to that . My LR is 2 x that size so I do have 2 sofas and 4 chairs but for a nice conversation plan a sofa and 2 chairs are my go to. in a space your size.

I like blue with tans and creams, but as was said by the previous poster, the white would be too stark, you have all tans and creams. The second one looks like it could work, it looks like it has enough color to pull from for accent colors. It depends on what other colors you want in the room, but I do like the second one.

One idea might be to add a very short wall on the left as you enter the living room so the opening to the living room is the same width as the entry ... and, by doing that you could put wall to wall built ins on that end of the living area, with or without a tv, and still create two separate sitting areas. I don't understand the "bar" against the solid wall behind the pantry and refrigerator. If you changed the pantry to a "butler's pantry" with a pass thru window, that would have made more sense. Is your "bar" a cabinet something built in? Have you considered either closing or narrowing the door between dining and living room and/or creating your pass thru bar there with your piano in the adjoining corner adjacent to the fireplace near the dining room wall? https://www.decorpad.com/search/butler-pantry-pass-through

As far as arranging furniture with the columns, I would tend to ignore them and group seating around the fireplace. You are always in good company with a more flexible 3-seat sofa and two upholstered armchairs (or swivels.) I think a sectional will just add another complication to the space. What is opposite the fireplace? Are there any floor outlets near the columns or actually in them? Is there any electrical wiring in the bulkhead above them? They might be interesting if lighted. You could also install some glass shelves between the two that are near the exterior wall. Lighted from the top, that would be a great display for something like colored blown glass. As for the lighting, you can find less expensive variations on those. Scaling them for your room size will also lower the price somewhat.
