Help needed - Living room furniture/decor arrangement!

Hello! We just purchased a new home and would love some ideas for how we can arrange the living room furniture and decor. We’re struggling because there are windows on either side of the fireplace and the room is a bit narrow. I don’t love having the TV over the fireplace (I’d rather use it for decor), but there aren’t many options. We have an L-shaped light gray sectional similar in size to the one pictured—I’d love to ditch it and get something new but my husband wants to see if we can make it work. If we must buy new because it absolutely will not work, we will!

Our style is contemporary farmhouse—grays, creams/whites, blues, greenery and rustic touches. The room seems very dark to me so we’d love to figure out ways to make it lighter, brighter and more open… with the right furniture arrangement, rug, lighting, decor, plants, paint colors, window trearments (should we keep what they have or do curtains? other ideas?)… The room connects to the kitchen at the far end (which is also a bit dark for my taste with the dark cabinets, so we may paint them white/cream). We’d love for the space to flow together.

FYI - we will probably paint the second floor railing as well.

@Roxie thats super pretty! love it! do you have a link for it? may check it out.

I’d also love to find some nice plants and lighting, mantle decor (they have a kind of narrow ledge there now—not sure how well it would work to place things on it), and maybe some nice arm chairs that swivel for the room!

Open to any chandelier, rug, etc recommendations as well :)

Just like your first inspiration picture you could have your couch in that spot with the back of the couch to the kitchen. Then the TV could go on the wall to the far left of the fireplace. Or is it too narrow that way? Also I would not use the red ottoman.

@Roxie thanks! All of the furniture pictured belongs to the current owners (no red ottoman! 😬)

What about other furniture pieces? If I put the TV on that wall, how should I display it—in a cabinet, or on a table?

Can you "float" your coach in the room, facing the patio doors, maybe with a sofa table behind it? You could then put the TV on the wall across from the fireplace, maybe a chair in the corner next to the fireplace. That might not be optimal TV viewing from the couch, however. But the arrangement doesn't look great where the TV is now.

For your space, yes you need a bigger rug with all the furniture on the rug. If the rusty red pillows are your accent color, maybe find a neutral rug with that also as an accent. You can keep this layout and add two chairs under the window with a table in between. Or you could move the love seat under the window and add a chair diagonally across as an accent chair. You need some artwork or photos or something above the sofa. Is this room just for reading/ conversation or is there a TV? Do you need any shelving for books or storage or display items? Good luck!

Oh good! lol! the new rug (similar to the rugs in your inspiration pics) will make the biggest differnce! same for replacong the fan with a gorgeous chandelier. For the TV i would definitely mount it to the wall professionally so no wires show if you don’t have it on the mantle. and if you have a gorgeious console table beneath thr tv on thr left wall that would be perfect.

One thing I just thought of—since our couch is a sectional, I’m wondering if placing it with its back to the kitchen (the other side would back up to the little hallway at the entrance to the room) would block it off too much. That wouldn’t leave many entry points.

I like your #1 and #2 inspopix. The light fixtures really make those rooms, so spend some $$$ there. You can get furniture made with Sunbrella fabric which is easier to maintain. Others really like microsuede for easy clean up. Check Ruggable for kid/pet friendly rugs you can throw in the washer.

@decoenthusiaste thanks! I love those first two pics too, especially the first because I feel like the room layout is *kinda* similar to the one in our new home. Except we have those damn pillars/columns which I feel like close off the space. Do you have any furniture arrangement ideas? And/or suggestions for where I can find some beautiful furniture and lighting without breaking the bank?

As far as arranging furniture with the columns, I would tend to ignore them and group seating around the fireplace. You are always in good company with a more flexible 3-seat sofa and two upholstered armchairs (or swivels.) I think a sectional will just add another complication to the space. What is opposite the fireplace? Are there any floor outlets near the columns or actually in them? Is there any electrical wiring in the bulkhead above them? They might be interesting if lighted. You could also install some glass shelves between the two that are near the exterior wall.

Lighted from the top, that would be a great display for something like colored blown glass. As for the lighting, you can find less expensive variations on those. Scaling them for your room size will also lower the price somewhat.

In a way, the window cornices seem to anchor a tall fp, and air space way up there. I'd probably keep them - is their fabric ok with you? they are light in color after all, but for style you mentioned, maybe cover with soft chambray, or a pleasing texture. I suppose there were curtains before.

Is anyone able to do any photoshop mockups with various furniture arrangements in the space? I am a visual person and find those so helpful!

Also, @decoenthusiaste I love that wagon wheel light you linked above. Is there a rule of thumb for how large a light fixture should be based on room size/ ceiling height? And how long should the chain be/ how far down should it come?

Wondering if I should get a 10 or 12 bulb version or if the 8 would be ok.
