General cost of trimming (casing) windows
Comments (2)Even "New England" doesn't mean much, as you could be in some depressed rural backwater or an upscale Boston suburb. In the best case scenario (inexpensive materials and a cheap handyman) I doubt the price would be lower than your $50 suggestion, and the $125 is entirely believable too. The casing and sill for a typical double-hung window could consume somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 linear feet of stock, at a buck-and-change per foot for pine, plus labor. There's also the question of whether the jambs of your windows are flush with the drywall; jamb extensions, if necessary, would require additional material and labor. There's no shortcut to a meaningful number here; you'll have to get some quotes....See MoreComposite door and window casing trim
Comments (10)There are two issues here: 1) poor workmanship, and the GC doesn't care. There are better materials for filling nail holes than caulk. And he's telling you this is how it is, and you can't do anything about it. 2) what is the price point of this new build? Does the price point of the new house actually pay the workers to do quality work? This is a legitimate question. Or has the majority of the profit already been squeezed out? It can be fixed. Not easily or inexpensively if it really is all the trim in the house and not only a few isolated sticks. Do you have any actual recourse with the builder to get this fixed?...See MoreQuestion on Replacement Windows and trim
Comments (5)Nails into the extension jamb is good and they should go into the outer edge of the casing and into a stud. The same for the top and bottom. Nails into sheetrock only do no good and just leave more holes to patch. On mitered joints you can run 1 nail parallel to the wall into each of the casings. Use the right size nails and no more than needed....See MoreTrim Advice Requested- Window, Door Casing, and Baseboard
Comments (15)Virgil and Joy, thank you so much for your input, for the informative link, and most of all for reassuring me that white baseboard and casings can be used. From Joy’s link, this home with the floating stairs (we will have 4” white oak threads with black stringer) resembles the modern home we are building. If 6” baseboards are used, then door casing should be 3” or is there another dimension recommended for a modern look? Not certain what is used in this photo....See MoreILoveRed
