New Rose Garden - Little Princess Spirea / Lilacs with Roses

I am getting part of our front yard professionally landscaped to put in a rose garden. We had a landscape architect draw up a plan. The suggestion is to edge the rose garden with eight Little Princess Spirea and also add three Little Miss Kim Lilac. I have attached the drawing. Use of Spirea and Lilac was suggested to extend the color in the garden.

Do you think putting down 8 Spirea bushes and 3 Lilac will take over the roses eventually? Would you suggest using less number of plants?

What direction is south? Are highlighted squares on the graph paper 5'x5' squares in reality on your property?

The crepe myrtle may shade the roses/lilacs.

May I suggest the repeat blooming lilacs: Boomerang 5'x5' pink, Purple Lilac Boomerang " " lavender color, and Dark Purple Boomerang 6'x5', darkest colored of the three Boomerang series of repeat flowering Lilacs.

They all give a fantastic spring flush, rest/intermittent bloom during the summer, and give a wonderful late summer/fall flowering. Dead heading spent flowers is mandatory to get the repetition.

Hey Zaphod42...your rose recommendations are truly appreciated. Those are some fine looking varieties. Julia child is so charming, Queen of Sweden is one of the most enchanting roses I have ever seen, Princess Alexandra of Kent seems to be composed of frills on top of frills, and the shade-tolerant varieties are also appreciated. I think I will definitely be adding at least one of the first three recommended, if not all three, to my garden this year. I will keep you posted on how this plays out. Again, thanks to infinity. The_morden man, the information you provided will also be extremely useful. Thank you for providing names of reputable nurseries. But, now that I see a different picture of Jeanne LaJoie, I seem to doubt this rose as being the one I saw years ago. It seems to have much larger roses than I recalled (these look to be possibly 3-4 inches in diameter, while the rose I remember was half that size around). Does the size of the blooms vary according to the size of the plant? As in, would the rose be larger when the plant reaches maturity, while a smaller plant would seem to have blooms on a much smaller scale Otherwise, if I ignore the difference in size, the rose seems very much the same. Either way, I think this Jeanne LaJoie will make a nice addition to the property. Would love to have it grow up along one of my downspouts which is now occupied by a clematis that turned out to be less spectacular than I expected. Maybe I will intertwine them!!!! And was also wondering how you all contend with your rose bushes (etc.) when they are not in bloom? What plants do you all use to disguise the less attractive forms? Or what other devices are customarily used so that they don't detract from the composition of the garden when not in bloom? And keep your favourite roses for my region coming!!!!! I am LOVVVING all of your recommendations!!!!!!!

I live in zone 5 a little west of Madison WI and have a "Blaze Improved" that has been in for over 8 years. I live in a valley so I get lots of wind and a little cooler climate than in town, my lilacs bloom 2 weeks after the ones there. I didn't do a very good job of taking care of Blaze (didn't prune, water regularly, or fertilize up till 2 years ago). The pictures below are from today, October 3rd, and it's still cranking out the 2.25" blooms on the 5-6 foot canes. It does get BS here but I don't care, this has got to be the bloomingist rose I have. The color is a true, rich, beautiful red that does not fade (picture color is pretty accurate). Little or no fragrance to me. I don't do anything special in the winter except dump a half bag of chip bark mulch on the base for winter and sometimes if I have extra oak leaves I use those instead. There is very little die back or pruning to do come spring. From what I've read, 'Blaze' is zone 6-10, blooms on old wood, and 'Blaze Improved' is zone 5-9 blooms on new and old wood, if that helps for pruning. Very consistent and dependable. I have both and I'm in zone 5, but I can't tell you about hardiness since they're both new roses for me this year. In general, I wouldn't worry about Olivia Rose being hardy in zone 5/6, since it's a rare Austin that doesn't survive that zone. Princess Charlene got my warmer spot of the yard just in case, but she looks like she has a good shot at winter survival. Like others have posted, she's already much bigger than Olivia in her first year. Not the 8' that you get in California, but she might get to chest height in a year or so which for me is really big. She's so far a middle of the bed rose, but not small like Olivia. Like others, I'm no help on fragrance, and Olivia hasn't bloomed in her first year as many of my new roses don't get that far in their first summers. Cynthia

Hi Darren. I only grow two on your list: Darcey Bussell and Florentina. Darcey is a great bloomer, but BSs terribly for me. I've read this is a problem for some while she's perfectly healthy for others so it just depends on the BS strains you have. I hide her nakedness with underplantings as I really like her. I should probably just move her where I can spray. Florentina on the other hand is a crazy healthy thing in my yard.... vigorous and thorny. However, I had no flowers the first year and only one flush the second on an Own Root plant. Since yours will most likely be grafted, YMMV! Once it gets going, it's a bloomer covered with fantastic clusters of flowers. Plant it in full sun.

Yes, it has alot to do with the varieties you are going to put in. Do you have any idea what kind of roses you like? Do you want standard hybrid teas or more romantic English type roses? Bush size and habit is very important for landscaping, not to mention roses that will do well in your climate. Theres nothing more disheartening than expecting tons of beautiful blooms and ending up with nothing but bare thorny stems.

I love David Austin Roses but I am sucker for any rose with fragrance.

Answering your questions @varovac and @SoFL. Here is my wishlist. I'll have to edit it out when I place the oder.

I could put maybe 9 rose bushes in the planned space and few will go on the other side of the garden. Some of the roses will go in other side of the garden.

The crepe myrtle is not huge. It is narrow. Thank you for the suggestions repeat blooming lilacs.
