Old house smell in built-in drawers?

DYH

I don't know how to describe the smell. I bought my 1939 house in 2015; renovated; moved in 2 years ago.

The downstairs no longer has the old house smell, but I'm now using one of the upstairs bedrooms as an art studio.

There is a wall of built-in drawers, shelves and cupboards that were installed in 1991, by the woman who lived here for 30 years. The contact paper is stuck in the bottom.

Well, when I opened those drawers "that smell" returned. I vacuumed and cleaned inside, but haven't been able to remove the old contact paper yet because I want to take the drawers outside to do that. I've placed an air freshener on the floor in front of the worst drawers.

Does anyone have suggestions for removing decades-old contact paper and getting rid of that smell?

Thanks!
