Clean or change AC ducts to get rid of old house smell???
Comments (9)Were previous owners smokers? We redid a rental house & got new screens, 2 coats paint on each room, completely redid the kitchen, new cabinets, countertops, new appliances, light fixtures, etc. New floors & new carpet throughout. As we worked of course it was fall & had windows open. Right after realtor started showing the house to renters it got cold & we had to turn on heat, wow, did the house stink, we opened up that furnace door & it was dark dingy yellowed smoke, stale stink. so hours more of bleach water & cleaners before the place was pretty good. We added bowls of vinegar at night & hid them in the morning. by the time renters moved in it was pretty good. So try vinegar bowls where kids & critters can't get at them Open box of soda in closed in areas might help. Take a vent cover off & wipe out area of vent & rinse rag out in clean bowl of water, is it all brownish? Then it's probably the vents, if it is just dirty water with no smell that might not be it. I took a long skinny broom to couple of my vents a few times, got almost nothing out but I had gotten a high quality duck tape for attics & seams & so I guess nothing get in them to speak of. I have allergies big time, also clean out the area under furnace where air goes into to it from hall. I put a heavy piece of carpet pad that is covered with plastic on the floor under there & then wipe out couple of times a year by taking vent cover off. Of course no 1 smokes in my house but that area does get some dust. Yes fridge, freezers & humidifiers have drip pans that need cleaning or they can make you sick. Also if you have any drains that don't have water in the elbow sewer gas can come up & make you very sick, is there drain in center of basement floor- be sure to put gallon of water down it often or keep it covered, upstairs bathroom not used, get water in all the drains including tub or shower. Good Luck, Hope you find the problem soon....See MoreHome library is musty smelling
Comments (3)Good luck. Have one of the kids do some sniffs, ask them where it smells the strongest. Did you buy them new? I bought my from goodwill and only bought the like new one hardback, with white pages which have turned yellow in just a couple of years, but I have not noticed an odor. My nose smells everything. Comments (7)I was just at Ikea today looking at kitchen cabinets with the intention of buying them for my kitchen. i could not help but notice a strong odor in every cabinet that I opened In the store. i believe the smell is emanating from the sides of the cabinet boxes which are constructed of particle board and glue and resin. The smell escapes from the holes drilled in the sides. I think the smell will continue to out gas for years. ikea is supposedly CARB2 and EPA compliant , I must say, it gives me pause. and it is for this reason that I won’t buy Ikea cabinets. i don’t want to pay thousands of dollars to introduce a chemical smell into my house....See MoreHow do I get my house to smell nice 24/7?
Comments (58)Oakley, I’m glad you got your big dog odor taken care of. When I was reading your notes I thought that maybe you had retrievers. I used to have a lab and they and other working dogs of the retriever variety are likely to smell a bit doggy because of the oil in their coat. Yes it is important to keep up with vacuuming because they shed a lot. You’ll also want to keep your vacuum cleaner emptied because the oily doggy smell can make that reek Recirculate doggy odor, even if you have replaceable bags. The filter was some part of the apparatus gets dusty with dog fragrance. (We have an in-house vac, so the canister is in the garage, so not a problem.) If you have wool or similar fiber carpeting, this can become “doggy” because the oil from the retrievers get onto the fibers. We had friends with golden retrievers and they had large sisal carpets and their home did not smell of their dogs. They were good housekeepers but not fastidious. They were dog lovers and the guy was a duck hunter so his dogs were not roomed often. (With retriever, the oil on their skin that gets into their hair helps keep them warm and buoyant, I believe.) One thing I found that’s a nice fragrance is close. Somehow to scape day project and we’re apparently in my sewing room. It took me a while to figure out where the nice thing clothes smell was coming from until I spotted a few loose clothes. Now I replace them every now and then just a few and it gives a light variable fragrance To that room. As others have suggested, and you said you do this, refresh the air as often as possible by opening the doors and windows and letting a lot of sunlight come in. Be thankful your pups are rolling in rotted seaweed or lobster bait. Your dogs are beautiful!...See MoreDYH
