Sidelights as doors

An ne

We need to replace very old and heavy patio doors (2 of them - one sliding, one fixed, each measures 36"x75"), and we would love to get exterior French doors instead. Because of the size and the placement of the outside steps that lead to the patio, we are thinking about door(s) with sidelights, but the dimensions of the current opening do not allow us to get standard-manufactured doors. I am not sure if anyone has ever tried using sidelights as doors (couldn't find anything on the Internet), but I am wondering if they can be adapted with hinges and handles and used as such. This way we will have 4 same-size panels, with the middle panels opening away from each other into a one-door entry.

I am also open to any other ideas that will gives us reasonably priced options. We are "do-it-yourself"ers on a budget.
