I just responded to you on another post. We have this door in my current house us without sidelights. The addition of sidelights would have let more light in as we have a Farmers' porch, but don't think they would have worked on on small Cape. Besides we installed the door in an existing opening. Will adding the sidelights change any window placement? Jenn

I need to replace my older steel front door: 6 panel, no windows, two full sidelights. The door opens to a farmer's porch and has western exposure. Lots of nice sunlight when just the storm door is closed. The door is just in front of the stairway and the upstairs bathroom is at the head of the stairs…( I know, don't ask…what was the builder/owner thinking when they did that). Built in 1995, cape style, two dormers, farmers porch…all overlooks open field and marsh view. So I'd like more light around the front door and am thinking of an etched oval front door window, not leaded design. I am thinking of eliminating both sidelights, one side light or putting in 3/4 sidelights. My concern is three fold, 1) privacy( stairs&bath), 2) style of door with house 3)a lot of cold winter wind from the open field and marsh. Any thoughts??

We don't have an updated elevation showing windows grids, garage door style or portico design. However, here is a basic elevation. Things to note that are not shown on this elevation: 1. The portico is slightly wider than shown here (about a foot wider - 11.5' wide) and will not have an arch. 2. The garage doors will be carriage style with windows at the top. 3. The windows on the right and the windows flanking the picture window on the left will have grids. Grid design is 2 across and 3 down (equal size). 4. The front door design has glass on the top half and will l likely have 2 over 2 grid design (equal size) Roof will be black and house will be white board and batten (lap siding will be eliminated). Windows are white. Front door will likely be navy. If we do sidelights, we can either paint navy like the door or keep them white. 6. House is a 1959 ranch in the SF bay area. 7. If we don't do sidelights, we could consider doing a dutch door. Weather is pretty nice here and we have low humidity so minimal bugs. I don't think we'd keep it open all the time but it might be a charming detail. Thanks, Julia

I agree. I was thinking something with clean lines (no curtains). Would you do a shade on the door itself and a separate one for the adjacent sidelight? Or would you do a single shade across the door/sidelight opening (and you would have to raise it to use the door)?
